Re: Latest 2016 iPads – Are the Gremlins now Gone ?

Panel mounted iPads don't hook into the pito-static system. My IA looks at me sideways when I suggest such things... I really wish we could get some relief from the CYA mentality where some of these non-required instrumentation is concerned. The G5 (and dynon efis) really is a pretty minor upgrade. The simplest solution would be for the FAA to give the manufacturers a blanket STC.

I'm still struggling to understand why the new dynon stc allows installation of the D10 in a cessna 172 - but not a 182 or gasp... a 180.

Pfft.

The EAA initially targeted the most popular aircraft for their STC, with the intent of adding others via AML over time. I'm sure the 182s and 180s will be added fairly soon. My Grumman buddies are trying to get the AA5/A/B and AA1/A/B/C added as well...

I'd like to see a spec sheet or brochure for the new G5. I couldn't find one online...hell, I couldn't even get the Garmin website's "contact us" button to work so I could email them to ask for one. At $1200 a pop, I don't want to order one up until I know a little more about them. Anyone have one or know how to get one?

Soy's comment re tying into the pitot/static system hit home, as in the past I've heard this has been an issue in some FAA approvals. I'm pretty much just interested in replacing the features of my vacuum attitude and directional indicators, and would just as soon not even have the airspeed/altimeter/vert speed display on the G5. A friend of mine says he can deselect some of the displays on his Dynon D6-- if I could deselect those features and not even connect the pitot / static lines, it would eliminate any concern over that as well as simplify both installation and use.

Hotrod, I would contact Pacific Coast Avionics on the phone to get more information.

The issue with pitot static being hooked in is a valid point, however, I am not replacing any required pitot/static instruments with the G5, and since the airplane is VFR, there is no certification or check required for the pitot static system, except for the transponder, which is really totally separate from what the G5 will tie into.

I would agree-- however, the IA who did the paperwork for a field-approval to install a Dynon D6 into another friend's C150TD said that there were two issues the FAA seemed to have a bug up their ass about:
tying the Dynon into the pitot/static system, and coming up with a supplement to the aircraft's Approved Flight Manual. Both pretty minor issues IMHO, but between them they hung up the approval process for quite a while. Turning a molehill into a mountain, not an unusual situation when dealing with you-know-who.

They sent me this link (which I already had):
http://www.pacificcoastavionics.com/pro ... ument.aspx
It didn't answer any of the questions I had, mainly about whether I could deselect some of the features/displays- for example, the airspeed / altimeter / vert speed.
I did email that question to the PCA rep, however this may be something that no one would know except for garmin. I told him that eliminating these displays would make for a less cluttered screen, and also that not connecting to the pitot / static systems would make for a less complicated approval in my certificated airplane. That last comment may set him off about "these are for experimentals & LSA's only", we'll see.

Reply from Randy Wright of PCA (about what I figured):
"As far as I can tell no there is no way to de-select any of the features on this unit. Since this is an installed piece of equipment I don’t know if you will be able to sign it off in a certified aircraft. FYI, Dynon is getting their D10A STC’d on some of the basic Cessna’s, 150, 152 & 172 but say there are more to follow. You may want to take a look at this website as well. http://www.dynonavionics.com/D10A-STC/index.html "
