Re: Let's see your vintage photos

I just take a picture of the prints with my digital camera. Most of my old photos are slides though and my slide scanner broke a long time ago. A professional photographer friend of mine built a box out of white foam board with a light bulb inside and a cutout to place the slide in. A stand holds his digital camera at the right distance to snap a picture of the slide. He says it makes better quality pictures than a slide scanner and is lots easier and faster.[/quote]

Any chances of getting some dimensions and a diagram of that box ? would like to make one to do my slides.
Thanks in advance

Re: Let's see your vintage photos

Whee - they all came out of New York originally. But some did scatter around the country. Buck's company invented the "new shielded" ignition that the Aeronca Sedan had. I looked up their story, They refueled by hauling gas cans up with a rope from speeding cars going down pre-arranged runways, but it still ran out of gas near Cleveland and landed in a farm field, killing the non-stop record they were going for.

These aren't pictures of anyone in my family but pictures from a good friend who has passed away; Art Semone. Art worked for North American from WWII until he retired in the late 70's. His last job was as a project engineer on the B1 bomber. These are a few of the pictures he took during his time at Edwards AFB. I scanned them for him.

Art was the man who gave me the inspiration and confidence to build my RV-4. He sold me on the RV-4 because he built one. He was really impressed with the design and construction. I figure the guy that built the B-1 ought to know. RIP Art and thanks for the inspiration!

My dad and a few of his buddies, started a flying club in college (College of Wooster late '40's). This is not my mother, but it is the club's T-Craft.
Image

This T-Craft was my parent's, before they got a cub. The guy is a local man (still living too!) Francis Wagner, who's daughter went to school with me.

Hey John you ever thought of painting the Graham Farms logo on your cub? Also, do you mind if I copy your Taylorcraft photos? I include them in slide shows at the Taylorcraft reunion every year.

Re: Let's see your vintage photos

Wow, some real good pics here.

Here's one, on the right, of me and Melissa at Coyote Hills In 1972. An early hang gliding site near San Jose, so early there was visqueen covered bamboo bombers and other very early gliders. I had just learned a valuable lesson, other then sled rides, this was my first ridge soaring. All was well at first, but no doubt confusing ground speed with air speed, I stalled out and beaked it into the hill. You can't tell but that glider had several bent tubes, and I was still not real sure what day it was! Nobody wore helmets back then BTW, go figure. At the tail end of the 60's it was also quite common to smell a certain odor in the air, if you know what I mean, some said the smoke was a great way to determine the wind direction!

Her choice in hat wear aside, she is the lady whose mother remarried after her father died. The guy she remarried was Lindbergh's wife brother, Dwight Marrow Jr. While eating dinner with them once a month, (required  ) I'm sure the topic of my hang gliding came up, but it was never mentioned that he had the Lindbergh connection, interesting, no? And, there is a long held belief by some that Dwight may have had something to do with the kidnapping, no kidding! I have in fact just ordered a book about just that topic, should be an interesting read. I need to drop in on Missy, she is an established Carmel artist, and though it's been 40 frigging years we parted on good terms, and after we get other stuff out of the way I need to ask her about Dwight and why I was kept ignorant, though I think I know the reason.

The other pics are landing in the surf at Big Sur, after flying of 2800' San Martin Top the center pic). The beach was so small that depending on the tide a water landing may be required, man I can't believe I survived that, one time a wave broke and damn near drug me out, still hooked in, fun times.

A couple I scanned in for Dave Hoepfinger. (Note to MTV: I have a flat bed scanner a very nice HP - and I have used it A LOT!!! well worth the price, much better than taking a picture of a picture, also you might think you are a poor photographer, but we all want to see the photos!!!)

Heres a story. Pictured is a pre ww 2 flight class. Far left beauty is my motherinlaw Pat. She soloed in that cub and then came Ww2 with gas rationing and flight restrictions so her flying ended. She is 93 now and flies when i tell her of my flights. Image

Diana - if I had been your instructor, you'd have had your twin rating without even leaving the ground!

Re: Let's see your vintage photos

Iceman - This isn't that old of a picture, but this lady did the same thing. She soloed a J-3 in Johnson City TN, and then the war broke out. Then she got married, had kids, etc. She is about the same age and had never been off the ground again until we found each other in Elizabethton, TN about 3-4 years ago. I took her up and let her fly. She was soo happy.

Dad, early 70's. Looks like some sort of Cherokee. Taken by my Mom who I would guess preferred the back seat.
