Lions, ski service call, "rescue", train wreck

Once I BS'd a bit with the sledhead (thanks for that Kevin) lion hunters who stage at the end of my driveway before tracking up MY powder on the way up to search for the big cats, I had to head out myself.Image One of my solar customers needed a service call last weekend, no access in other then snowmobile so I was forced to fly in, then snowshoe 1/4 mile to the cabin. A pretty short touchdown over the barbed wire fence, then I laid down tracks, before stopping, for my takeoff runway, and then came around again, full stopped, and snowshoed to work.Image Work done I headed south to check on a few other past job sites (free aerial condition inspection is a service I offer my local solar customers, whether they want it or not  ), on the way many, many hillsides needed to be tracked up a bit.Image Then, a REAL train wreck.....not some Hollywood star cratering, but 17 freight cars derailed a few days ago, and still there mostly.Image On the way home I spotted some parked snowmobilers high up on a bench who seemed to be calling for help, they were waving frantically so of course I landed nearby and only then found they were only being friendly and not in need of assistance #-o Nice guys, one had a brother who's a pilot but he had no idea about this type of flying.Image 12 to 16" of fresh powder, 6 degree temps, and dead calm winds everywhere I went!

Yeah, what Emmet said. On all fronts.

I keep saying next year. Hopefully that'll be true, next year.

For those of us landlubbers that wish we could be up there, next time try full rudder, opposite aileron and see if you can leave a single ski $hithook track.

I think I'll pass on that one ski thing.... though it is fun to keep the turns skid free. Uphill landings are the way to do that, I'll post a pic at some point of the same speed and radius turn, but on flat ground. I'm pretty sure it will show snow being thrown to the outside of the turn. All of this while keeping in mind sideloads on the gear of course. I don't know but I'd imagine any ski skegs are a tradeoff as far as ease of turning versus tracking capabilty? Whatever, I'm happy with the Datum's and their handling, keep in mind they are the 2000 model, as in gross weight, so I am nice and light on the snow for the 1300 lb gross, I have powder skis in other words!

Train wreck looked pretty wild-- anybody hurt? What caused it?

Didn't want to be morbid, so I didn't mention it, but yeah the guy (33 year county R & B employee) driving the fully loaded gravel truck with pup trailer blew through the crossing in very thick fog. The train cars were empty, so the truck "won", and knocked it off the tracks. He died. A county a few south of mine, but I relate as I have a few buddies here who work for the local R & B. Lots of trains in my area, and they take their toll, not their fault though of course.
