Re: Looking at an M4 210C close to TBO vs a backcountry PA22

my buddy just delivered his 170 /o 360 to a student pilot in Homer Alaska... went for 79,000... but then there isn't another like it in the country. wins best modified at the 170 convention all the time... too bad it'll get thrashed now....new owner is keeping it on gravel outside and when he gets his license it's going on floats and skis in the winter...

You might wanna take a look at the Sutton exhaust instead of the Leading Edge-- lighter & simpler, and leaves more room in the firewall area. Don't know about the horsepower claims for either one, but I tend to discount those anyway....

Re: Looking at an M4 210C close to TBO vs a backcountry PA22

If their claim of 16 HP improvement is correct, I'd say it's worth the weight penalty. Based on what I've read, there's a very noticeable improvement in RPM and power. Anyway, I would tend to believe the manufacturers claims.

How easy is it to upgrade from single to double puck clevelands and throw some Goodyear 26" or larger on a PA22/20? Are field approvals a real PITA or not too bad? Assuming the FAA gets re-funded, of course ;) I'm concerned that I'll buy a relatively inexpensive plane that can't be readily upgraded.

STC's for the Borer and 26" GY, but no STC yet for double pucks if you want to go to AKBushwheels, although the tires themselves are STC'd. Brian at Steve's aircraft did the paperwork and the install of my 62A kit under a field approval. We had to use the 62A kit (6 bolt wheels) as this was the only previous paper trail we could find to use.

Congrats, that's one SHARP looking plane, and it already has some good upgrades on it. Even the Barnstormers asking price looked very reasonable for such a nice airplane. Good on you !!!

Re: Looking at an M4 210C close to TBO vs a backcountry PA22

I have owned both and put a lot of hours on each and I LOVED the Maule.

I realize that the IO360 engine can be expensive to o/h but it really is a great engine. Mine seemed to run forever.

the PA 20-150 was a lot of fun but I would junp out of it in a minute for the Maule.

I presently own a PA 32 because it is family size.

I was planning to go see that plane myself when I am in the PNW next week...last month I went to see a Pacer out in CA but didn't buy. Pacers are on my short list. I think bang for the buck they are pretty hard to beat. Would like to hear how this one works for you.

Univair sells an STC'd double-puck kit, p/n 199-231. STC # SA45RM.

That kit only works with a 700 series or smaller tire due to the caliper rubbing the tire.

Congrats on the airplane! That one caught my eye, too. Thanks for the information regarding metalized airplanes, as well. I will keep looking :)
