Looking for a '58 - '59 182

I'm looking for a good straight '58 or '59 182 and thought you guys might know of one for sale or an owner contemplating selling. I have looked at all the ones on the internet that are within the western US and have even taken two trips to look at some but inevitably I find a misrepresented aircraft be it with damage history or something else.

I am not looking for the most immaculate bird out there but I would like one with a strong engine (mid time or better) and no damage history or very minor damage at the most. I don't really care about paint or interior as long as it is not falling apart. Standard instruments with decent radios that work... none with illegal radios as I have already dealt with one of those.

Anyone know of a bird that fits this bill?

Thanks.

What is wrong with a 56 or 57?

58Skylane,

You need to keep yours and get your engine done. Besides, I need one flying... I have had too many projects in the last couple years - Its time to fly not build for me.

Tim,

Nothing wrong with the '56 or '57 but I like the thicker gear, higher gross, and rudder trim of the '58 & '59. The cowl flaps on the '59 are a good add to for those climbs on hot days.

I agree....... And agree on the cowl flaps, too. That's one item I wish the 58 had. Not only for climb out on hot days, but for slow flight on hot days too.

The '57 had the gross weight increase (2650) and the thicker gear (3/4" vs. 1 1/16")....

The '58 received the rudder trim and exhaust moved to the right side but is otherwise identical to a '57-

The cowl flaps are a plus but many pre-'59 182 owners say their engines stay reasonably cool without them... "calling Bill Reid"..

I've never considered an old radio a deterrent to buying a plane. You could snatch that thing out in 3 minutes and install a $600 KX175B in its place in 2 hours. No need to walk away from a deal-

Good luck with the search. I'll talk to a buddy of mine at KSLC. He sometimes grumbles about selling his '59.

All 182"s are great planes. If you have ever done slow flight in an early 182 (1956 to 1961) that has the trimable horizontal stabilaizer, you will be a bit disapointed in the later ones. I do think the extra 4" width would be nice.

The deterrent was not really the radio but rather the fact that the owner was not willing to negotiate on the price after billing the aircraft as a dual nav/comm airplane with dual glide slopes. The plane had other issues with conflicting log entries on the overhaul time on the engine and when the overhaul was actually done. It was not just a radio issue.

Yes Tim all 182s are good planes but you are right about the earlier straight tails. The flying stab and the johnson bar flaps are great. I would consider up to a 1960 as these are basically the same bird as the '59 but with the swept tail and a slightly different baggage bulkhead.

When trimmed right, I can fly my 58 182 around 80-90 (or slower) all day long. Except hot days :(

And for a bigger guy like me (heck no! I'm not given up on the cheeseburgers!), the extra 4" would be great! I'm thinking about installing (someday) bubble windows to help with elbow room :-k

I'm here ---- Before 1959 (no cowl flap 182's) will run cooler anytime -1959 added Cowl flaps ,1960 added slant tail and 1962 added back window and wider fuselage. Up to 1961 they had manual flaps and trim-able horizontal tail. 1956 Gross was (is) 2550 lbs. ,1957 lowered fuselage 4 inches and wide main gear,1957 gross went up to 2650 lbs.

N2436G is one of my planes. 1 of 4......She's a 1959 C-182 B There are times I think about selling her, but I just love flying her so much, and she performs of faithfully, I just never do. My latest idea is converting her to tail wheel.....C182/180. Anyway the details;

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fly_the_pl ... hotostream feel free to look around the photo stream if you like

ACTT 3450
ESFREMAN 450 0470L
PSMOH 230 McCauley C-203

Horton Stol
Javelin Aux fuel tank
King older audio panel
175B & KX155 nav coms
150 transponder
62 DME
WX 9 storm Scope
ADF
some other old stuff
fair interior....other than front seats and no carpet
Paint....kinda' like some girls you meet.....good from far, but far from good.....needs paint

I'd probably think about selln' her if I could trade the money for a C-170 with a similar time 180 hp. 0360, with the rest in fair condition. Have a 63' C-182 in the collection...so I really don't need both.....talk to me if you have any ideas.....
