Re: Low bridge

The RAF does take it's low level training seriously. None of this minimum altitude because it is training sissy stuff. (not my words)

Sweet pic Z. My bro did quite a bit of flying with the RAF Harrier guys in joint ops and would concur.

Re: Low bridge

The bridge picture minds me of one I seem to recall seeing years ago of a a P-51 flying through the Arc d' Triumph. I've searched the web for a copy, but haven't found one. Has anyone else seen one like that, or am I imagining things?

Couldn't find a P-51, but this wasn't too bad.

Nice pull! In this age, no one trusts any digital image anymore because the quality of image manipulation that's possible is astoundingly good.

Re: Low bridge

Assuming that's all real and not the product of a professional version of Photoshop, can you imagine the rush of flying a Spit at nearly 400 mph under a bridge with that little clearance in all directions? The relief afterwards would be terrific: "I'm alive!" :)

"Wanted: Arch Enemy #1."
Many people are sure that arch flying was a dangerous and irresponsible thing to do. True, for the average person, or even the average pilot, that would be the case. What those people don't realize is that Tim is not average. There are some things a person can learn with a lot of practice or with a good instructor, or even by accident. There are other things that a person can only get from God. The outstanding perception and the ability to be one with a machine, and to make something happen just because you see how it should happen, is something you cannot just learn. Tim also hastens to point out that the arches he’s flow through are about as wide as the runway width at his home airport, and he says, "I haven’t missed the runway yet!"

Re: Low bridge

Some one told me  that the trick to fly where it is tight is to not worry about what you might hit but focus on where you are going!!
Know I know from landing on some county roads that when the track or pavement is as wide as the Maules wings, you don't have to worry about all the tall tress along side of the road as (most don't go out over the pavement) Thats one advantage of the short wings  Same with some of the tight bridges  Or at least thats what my cousins brother in law sister told me?
Kinda like sking or biking, you have to know you can get through, or you won't!!

Re: Low bridge

reminds me of Bob Hoover's book when the other pilots were betting he wouldn't fly under a bridge over a narrow gorge so he did it four times looping back over the top each time

Re: Low bridge

The pilot was Ray Hanna, of The Old Flying Machine Company, an accomplished display pilot.

Piece of Cake TV series.

From Wiki:

"Veteran Pilot Ray Hanna (1928-2005) performed the stunt where the Spitfire flies under the low bridge.[6] The scene was filmed at a bridge at Winston near Barnard Castle. Hanna, a New-Zealand-born former RAF pilot and Red Arrows member, was 59-years-old when he performed the stunt."
