Lyc IO-540 A1A5
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
I am looking for a Lycoming IO-540 A1A5 290hp. and have not been very lucky in finding one. I've tried Barnstormers, Google. Any ideas of who might sell them or might be able to find one for me, as is or O/Hd?

I have a friend that has one of those for sale complete with prop and everything and i belive it has next no hrs on it. He rebuilt a Found Centenial and had this motor total y rebuilt. When he put the Found on floats it did not perform the way he wanted so he had a turbo 350hp motor and 3blade prop put together and now he is happy.
He is away this week, when he gets back i will pass along his number.

Did they make a 290hp version of the IO-540? I think they are normally 260? That may explain some trouble finding one, or maybe not. I just bought one recently. Apparently if you want more than 260hp you ideally want a -K block (heavier) with the larger thrust case, otherwise it's too much for the bearings and they don't last as long. Generally the IO-540 don't seem to pop up as often as I expected on Barnstormers second-hand and in decent condition, so we had a new one put together instead. Hope something in there helps!
Edit:
Ok - I checked the list (
http://www.meyette.us/LycomingEngineNumbers.htm) and apologies you are quite right, they did release a high compression variation. Ignore my first comment!

Yeah Battson, as you can see on the list, there is a 290hp, and it's the one my airplane uses. Thanks for the list, though.

I've been using Lycoming factory rebuilt or overhauled for the last few years, good pricing and good engines. But we don't have the luxury of access to hundreds of overhaul shops like the USA guys have

You might try checking with the service centers on this list, I believe that is the same engine that is on the Commander 500B and the Shrike.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

How much, and what are the hours on the engines, and dates on when they were overhauled?
