Mack Mesa Fly-In Photo Thread

Had a spectacular time at Mack Mesa this weekend. First-class fly in, good attendance, and lots of cool people and flying. Weather was perfect, we had a 10-strip poker run, a live band for the dinner and campfire, and we even had our own cannon! (his best shot with a 10-pound bowling ball is 1 mile, 800 feet)

Thanks to Steve, Lexi, Ladd, Rod, Travis and everyone who worked hard to put on such a great fly-in.

I can't get the Facebook photos to show up for some reason, so here are a couple that work and a bunch of links to the others.

One of my favorite spots in Utah.

Thanks Troy. If they had an IQ test before a person could use a computer, I'd be in trouble!

Oddly enough, your fix seems to have worked on my mobile phone but still doesn't display the pics on my computer. I have a question in to the big Z to see what he recommends.

Re: Mack Mesa Fly-In Photo Thread

Great pictures and it looks like it was a well organized Fly-In.

In your Hubbard picture, it looks like your engine is running but I can't see anyone inside of your plane.

Re: Mack Mesa Fly-In Photo Thread

When I'm flying backcountry strips by myself, I generally just set the brakes and leave the engine running at low idle if I'm just jumping out to take a picture. Having flooded a hot engine on restart before and coming close to wearing down my battery, I figure it's one less thing that can go wrong if I just leave it running so I don't have to restart. May not be the recommended practice, but it works ok for me.

When I'm alone in the backcountry, I always breathe a little sigh of relief each time the engine fires up! :D

Great report and photos Ranch Pilot. It was a great fly-in and Saturday night's BBQ was the best ever.

We had a great time at the Mack Mesa Fly-in. The bowling ball canon is awesome! Great live band for the BBQ and fire pit on Saturday night, lots of cool strips, great people and a great airport. I'll post some pictures later today. Thanks to everyone involved!

Where else can you order pizza for a backcountry fly-in? Chuck ate 2 pieces by himself ;)

Planes at Pinyon for the hay ride to breakfast.

Departing Pinyon and flying over the hangar and planes with pilots still eating breakfast.

Winter Springs Airstrip up on the Tavaputs Plateau - somewhere in the 7,000 to 7,500ft range in elevation
Image

Canyons in the plateau
Image

Moon Ridge strip - about 7,700 ft if I remember right. Great camping spot on the far end overlooking the canyon
Image

Coming in for the spot landing contest - John won, I think I was 4th or 5th. No worries, had a blast just trying to compete with the better pilots!
Image

We went to the lake in the afternoon (about 1.5 miles, we took the airport van) and borrowed a stand up paddle board.
Image

Really good live band for the BBQ and they moved over by the fire pit after it got dark.
Image

Ka boom! Some farmer is going to be turning up bowling balls in his field!

Great photos Allen. Where did you order the pizza and did they delve or did you pick it up in the van.

The pizzas were delivered after Ladd explained to the driver how to get there over the phone. The kid was nice, but he did stop on the runway... The pizzas were great!

Had a great time at the Jamboree. Beautiful weather and amazing scenery made for awesome flying. Spotted lots of wildlife including elk, deer, a bear with cubs and wild horses. Thanks to everyone who helped put this on. You did a fantastic job!

It was really fun meeting new friends and getting my first high altitude backcountry flying experience. Thanks to those who led me around to all the strips.

Just putting it out there....but those slack lines are pure evil! just ask the giant purple bruises up and down the insides of my legs! my wife can jump around on them and do all sorts of tricks, but I've decided there impossible and she must be using witchcraft!
