mag dead / r/l?

cessna 180 O-470R

mag went dead the other day in flight, when i turn it to "R" the engine quits, so does this mean that the right mag is dead? i been getting a few conflicting reports from guys on the field about this, some are saying my left mag is dead, not my right

Re: mag dead / r/l?

If the switch is on R, and the engine quits, the Right magneto has a problem. Or your ignition switch does.

Points, condenser, capacitor, P-lead interface, nylon distributor gear; All could be a trouble item that could render a mag dead. I'm experiencing this very fun right now too!

Re: mag dead / r/l?

Make sure you check that the leads going to the mag are indeed on the correct mag. Its a PIA to find out you changed the wrong mag because somebody didnt bother to hook up the p-leads correctly.

Re: mag dead / r/l?

I've just recently remedied magneto trouble with a lot of good help. I would recommend you contact Aircraft Magneto Service, Boeing Field, Seattle. They were extremely helpful to me in troubleshooting my Bendix 1200's :D , although they're well versed in everything else. Their background is aircraft accessories so they can tell you what else might be the trouble if it's not the mags. They have a troubleshooting guide published on their website called 'Is it the Mag?' The guide is listed in the sidebar. You'll find their website at  http://www.aircraftmagnetoservice.net/

Re: mag dead / r/l?

IF it were me, I would consider disconnecting the right mag p lead at the magneto. Start the engine and check the mags.
If the engine still quits in the Right position, you have eliminated a grounded p lead or ignition switch as the problem.
That would be the easiest check.

If it still quits, I would then pull the magneto.

Good luck

Ditto the recommendation on making sure the p-lead isn't the problem. This is a pretty common thing to happen.
