Making an Airstrip in about two hours?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
My 13 year old daughter and I made an airstip in about two hours today. Some river rock (free) on the island, a gallon of old white house paint, a shovel for varmit holes, weed cutter, and a laser range finder made it all possible. The location is undisclosed, and we made a pretty good 864 foot runway for my Cessna 180 friends. Only need about 300 feet for the Maule. :D :D Have a good weekend.

James

Do you think you can get about 150ft more on you undisclosed location? How is the brush? Looks like some sage brush on one end, does the runway go through that? Thanks!

There's no secrets on the internet! That's New York Island! :D (Yes, that's really the name.)

Of course, if you google for New York Island, you get a bazillion hits for some shithole on the east coast. :?

Now let the bidding start for the latitude and longitude. Do I hear 1 beer?

[-X I don't live in New York. But I have flown an AH1-F up at Ft Drum. I have to say, everyone does think of New York City as New York. But, Up State New York is some of the most beautiful back country in the country. The addorandacks are stunning. Watertown get more snow than anywhere in the lower 48 and probably half of Alaska. I never saw more beaver dams from the air. When people come east you always hear "I never Knew it was so Green."

Home is where you hang your hat, but give yourself a treat and fly east once in a while. Living along the Chesapeake Bay may have spoiled me? :D

This being said, I really enjoy your stories and photos. Please keep them coming! =D>

I have no idea where your new spot is there james, but be careful "improving" airstrips on Federal land...just friendly advice from experience. [-X

I read an article in natl geo. It said maine has more trees per square mile than any other state. Lot's of people come here and can't beleive the large tracts of undeveloped land. 90% is forested/undeveloped. The only downside is all those trees leave few landing sites unless floats or skis are used on lakes/rivers.

Looks like some great memories are being made.
I have had some great times in the backcountry with my daughter, mostly with the horses but a few airplane camping trips that we won't soon forget.
