400 msl and -40F is nearly -7000 ft DA.
Not really--assuming 30.00 altimeter, it's -871' DA. At 31.00, it's -2108' DA (electronic e6b). Still darned low. Edit: an online DA calculator claims -6991 DA at 30.00 and -8172 DA at 31.00. One of these electronic marvels is wrong!

I was so accustomed to just leaving the throttle alone after learning how to work a CS prop in Laramie that I was totally surprised to see how high the MP goes on take off from low elevation airports. But it's not a big deal to dial it back to the top of the green before dialing back the prop. Just keep flying the airplane at the same time. :) I think that's the gravamen of Mike Busch's article, that it's a lot more critical to keep control than to worry excessively about reducing the MP right away.

But turbo'd airplanes, especially ones with manual wastegates or fixed wastegates, are much more sensitive to over-pressures. There's a big difference between showing 31" on the MP or showing 40" or more in an engine designed for no more than a couple inches over 31".

GSP,
Your first post mentioned a power enrichment valve. I believe that only applies to a carbureted engine. I don't think there is such a circuit on our injected 205's.

Hmmm....that's a good point. The article didn't differentiate between fuel injected and non fuel injected, just normally aspirated and turbo charged. I'll see what I can find. Anyone else know off the top of their heads?

How are things in CO and Skywest? Are you coming to any of the fly-ins this year?

Life's good, keeping busy. Wife and two high school daughters are going on a school sponsored trip to Italy this summer. That's got me busy picking up all the extra work I can find (and handle, AND stay 117 legal! ) to keep the budget on an even keel. I'm hoping to make a flyin or two though!

I had a scary thing happen to me in flying into Iowa last winter. the OAT was -20'ish and the DA was -850'ish MSL. On final with the throttle at idle and the mixture to the wall, the engine stopped. The engine wasn't getting enough fuel and started windmilling.

Scary to be low and slow and have the engine stop. I got it restarted, and had my mixture adjustment tuned, so hopefully it won't happen again.
