Mann Lake, Oregon Trip Report

I have two buddies that wanted to drive over to Mann Lake. They invited me to come along on the 7.5 hr drive. I said that if weather was ok I may drop in the next day. Did a google earth pre plan and noticed the airplane parking next to the lake. Also did some asking on BCP but not to much info from you guys.viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9801&p=130804&hilit=mann+lake#p130804 Had to be the pioneer

19th of April and the wx was as they say not recomended vfr. Left anyway and after I got east of the Warner Mountains it was easy. This pic is taken just west of Denio Junction with the Steens Mountains in the distance.

Plenty of room at the airplane parking spot

Our camp. Nice that the ground troops brought a nice tent. Steens backgroound.

This lake has Lahontan Cutthrout Trout. They vary in looks. Met a guy that has fished it for years and he says no two look alike

Headin home. The 310 fork and 600x6 on the nose are designed for cattle gaurds

Could not resist stopping on the way home for a cheese burger with grilled onion and a raspberry shake at a trendy spot just north of Denio Junction Image

Almost home. Did I say that I like vfr in the pacific northwest. Still in Nevada and can see Mt Shasta up ahead. No fancy stuff to find my way.Image

This will be an annual trip for me.

Re: Mann Lake, Oregon Trip Report

Tim,
Thanks for the report! I spent saturday night and most of Sunday bumming around the area on my way home from Utah last week. What a great area. I landed more places than I can count, found lift on the ridges and lakebed as I turned the old shortwing into a sailplane, and just sat and stared at the mountains. The only thing missing was a place to fish, and you just figured that out. Did you visit the Alvord Hotspring?

We stayed longer than planed on the last day so I passed on the springs. I have stopped there in the past.

Did you notice the superior vision over the nose of the plane (nice when navigating cattle guards) that a 182 has? :D :D :D

That's why there's a height requirement to be able to fly a tail dragger.

Hey now...... Take it easy on my little sailor buddy, now [-X

I know he causes trouble on some other threads. But I still have his back. Us 182 guys stick together. (damn, does that sound good what I just said? Or kinda creepy?). :D

Now that's what I love to see, and airplen, a trout, and a fly rod. How can life get any better than that!

Wow. Nice plane, nice cutt, bamboo, an old Pleuger, great scenery and friends to share it with. So this is how life's supposed to be!

Do you need a boat to really fish it, or is it good from the bank? I think I need to go there! 8)

I talked to few folks that have fished the place for years. The earlier in the year you go the closer to the bamk they are because of water temp. Also the later you go (warm water) the softer the flesh and a bit wormy.

Chest waiters are what everybody was using.

Thanks Tim. I've got some chest waders, but they're not nearly as nice as those chest waiters!
