Marble, CO Fly-in 2011 (videos)

Marble once again had a terrific fly-in, and a few of us from BCP were in attendance. What a great time and it was great to see so many people there (50+ planes I believe). Glen and Diane were wonderful hosts and had the place looking amazing. Thanks for all the hard work from everyone that pitched in, best fly-in in Colorado bar none.

Here's my trip report about Nate, Alec, Karen and I crossing the CO Rockies. Lots of mountain flying in beautiful Colorado.

On Thursday afternoon we departed southwest, with a quick stop at KFLY to top the tanks off.

Crossing Hayden Pass
Image

From there we crossed the San Luis Valley and headed for Morning Shadows
Image

Morning Shadows is a great strip tucked in a cool mountain valley. About the time we were taxing off the strip, Tom swung by in his Super Cub to say hi.
Image

Tom and his buddy (I forget his name, ) showed us around Lionel's slice of heaven. It wasn't long after Tom left that the man himself showed up.

Nate and Lionel.

About dusk the rain started to fall, then light hail, then it dumped for hours. Lionel was generous enough to let us use his cabin, and we all chatted for a few hours. We couldn't thank him enough, not a great night to sleep in a tent.

The next morning we were welcomed with low clouds and it was apparent a early morning departure to Marble wasn't in the cards.

Image

We waited a few hours and Tom flew over with his son (Who just had his first solo that morning! =D> Congrats ) in the Cub and said hi. Tom said the valley was clear and after some discussion we headed over to Hooper for a soak in the hot springs pool (http://www.sanddunespool.com/)

I think they farm here.

This places was damn cool and exceeded my expectations ten fold. Great food, great 98° pool, great atmosphere, very clean. We will be back! (A quick call is all that is needed to make sure the farmers know to keep clear of the runway).

From there we flew back to Morning Shadows, but not without stopping at a high strip and having a stuck starter. All I can say is be prepared and keep your friends on speed dial (Thanks!). After a few hours, all was well and we were able to head back just in time for dinner and a wet drink. 8)

On Saturday morning we took the long way to Marble via Creede and Lake City. Once again, a beautiful flight through some of Colorado's best scenery.

From there we dropped down into Marble from the southeast, it felt good to be back.

The new campsite is pretty sweet.

The BBQ dinner was terrific, not an empty stomach to be found.

Glen and Diane, our gracious hosts. Year after year they welcome people back to their private strip.

Cool shot of the moon coming up over the Crystal River.

A full moon and Gary's margs made for a good night.

Sunday morning departure was a bit like JC, lined up 6 deep waiting for T/O.
Image

The flight home included Taylor Park, Cottonwood pass, a stop at KAPA for fuel, and then home sweet home.

Both Alec and Karen had a great trip and learned a few things about flying. It was great seeing everyone this weekend and the hospitality was over the top. And once again, thanks to those who helped and to those who were checking in on us.

Cheers,
Matt

Re: Marble, CO Fly-in 2011

Thanks for the great summary and pics. It was truly a blast, and the Gallegos' have a special place. It's amazing how so little has changed in over 20 years in Marble...

Great bike riding, fun folks, and enough great food to get me through to Monday.

50 planes in all, including the 9pm arrival by moonlight, and 2 more helicopters.

The Station Wagons were beautiful. The Moose was incredible too.

Here's looking forward to 2012.

Looks like it was a great trip! And I must say those Stinsons look so good with big tires (I really wish we could get some big tires on our pacer lol) Also a great pic of Capitol, have you climbed it? One of my friends climbed it this summer, and it sounds like an amazing experience.

Great pics to look at as I sit awaiting a huge cell to pass through here in Delaware. Nothing like delays prior to a 9 hour transatlantic flight.

Thanks lesuther, I'm sure I met you there, but I'm not sure who you are by screen name. And yes, the late night bottle passing after Gary's margs made me immune to the cool night. My first time drinking cherry water.

Thanks Kev. I've been up Capitol a few years ago, it's as impressive from the ground as it is from the air. Great climb!

We missed you TP, it was by far the most people and planes at Marble. The Avenger fly-by was uber cool too. No shoes had to be dried this year. :) Congrats on the healthy kiddo too!

Re: Marble, CO Fly-in 2011 (videos)

It was a great time, as usual. No doubt that Glen and Diane are great hosts, but a lot of credit must go to Bill for putting it all together each year. And for sure, the BBQ put on by the Marble Historical Society (I get such a kick out of that name, considering the total population is about 200) is tremendous.

I was the last to leave on Sunday. The L19s did a fly-over, with smoke, which was cool. As soon as I figure out how to post a picture, I'll do that.

As I left, Glen called me on the radio, thanked me for coming, and said to be sure to come back next year--and you can bet I will!.

Here they are. They took off, formed up, flew back over the strip, then turned around east of the strip and formed up again for the fly by. Pretty cool.
