Maule

I have been interested in getting a Maule, but have heard from a few people that they don't like them to much. I have also heard from other people they like them a lot. Their specs look very impressive. I am just looking for some feedback on why people like them so much, or why they don't.

Same reason why some people like Fords and others like Chevy's.

When lacking experience of my own, I have always given respect to Budd Davissons's observations and reviews. The love them or hate them opinion is not lost on him.

Re: Maule

Being a Maule Driver (M5-235C) I am probably a bit prejudiced, but I like the plane and I love what you can haul. Opening up the entire right side for loading is a major bonus. In addition you may want to look at a Cessna parts price list and then a Maule parts price list. BIG difference.

The insurance companies can get a bit cranky about good rates until you get some time, but then again the same would go for C-180 insurance.

You should look up Jeremy Ainsworth at http://www.mauleak.com/ He is the Maule guru and what he does not know you don't need to know.

Good luck.

Re: Maule

I really like my M7. I would rather have a 185 with a stretcher door. With the same hours on the airframe and motor as in my Maule. The same GPS, com, and audio controller. The only hitch is to get that combo would cost me 50-80K more than the Maule.

Hey Rob,

Don't forget the catlike reflexes, superior piloting skills, intelligence, and good looks required to fly a Maule. :)

Why do you want a stretcher door?? For your recliner or bigger go-ped?

Re: Maule

I believe it's the ol' Ford/Chev thing.
Whatever you buy (especially an expensive thing) you think it's GREAT.
Maules have a huge & easy accessible cargo area but don't believe the STOL spec's they advertise.
When you ask any airplane owner how he likes his plane, whad'ya think he's gonna say! :)

Nimpo, you are right, the real numbers out perform the book numbers.
350 feet ground roll takeoff at full gross,
86 ft landings light load ,
have been measured.

As a second generation Maule owner and as have owned 3 different Maules, 3 185's, 4 206's, a Stinson, a high powered J5' and a few others and a few twins. I always liked what my Dad said about a Maule, they are not a pretty plane, there not a fancy plane, but they are a damn honest plane that will save your ass when you do something stupid!! He wrecked one doing something pretty stupid, took him a year to heal up and then he went to Moultrie and bought a new one, it happens to be the one Super Maule flys around!
Most cub and spam can drivers don't like maules and will talk trash about them. Of course they have to because they paid way more for there birds!!
A Maule is no cub, and it will never be a 185! But it will almost do what either one of them does.
A Maule hauls just about the entire useful load of most cubs in the fuel tanks.
Takes a few feet farther to land and take off than a cub but hauls way more and will get there almost twice as fast and if you fly as slow as a cub will use the same amount of fuel.
The 185 will haul more, fly faster, uses way more fuel, cost way more to repair and operate.
Try loading 2 barrels of fuel in a 185' that will make your day, pretty easy in a Maule, and you will never get just 1 in a cub.
You have to sit in the cub overnight if you sleep in one, you can curl up in the back of a Maule, and stretch out and lay flat in a 185.
If you want honest answers about any of the Maules and if you want to learn how to fly one, get in contact with Jeremy, Like someone else said, what he can't tell you, you don't need to know!

Re: Maule

I don't seem to understand the "couldn't afford a 180 so I got a maule" thing. They seem to be fairly close in price to me... Unless you get a lesser powered older maule.. But then wouldn't that be more like comparing to a 170? Or 170/180hp. Just curious. I've always been intrigued by maules as well but have not had the privilege yet. Not even a ride! Cool topic. I'll just take one of each. Add a beaver and that's all I need. A super cub a maule a 180 and a beaver. That's all I need. And a twin beech. That's all I need. And a TBM. That's all I need. And a.... :D
