Maule back seat

I've lost where the heck it was originally posted, it was somewhere along that multiple W&B sheet string.
But if anybody wants to know the Maule quick removal kit for the back seat is $130. I should have it in a couple of days and will install it then if anybody is interested.

a64, If you have the ability to take some digital pictures of the process and wouldn't mind sharing them either by e-mail or in the forum, I would appreciate the information. The more I hear about the Maules, the more I like. Taking that seat out that quick is appealing. What great versatility.

That is one thing that is a PITA about my 182, and that's removing the rear seat. I know it's only 5 bolts, and they are not the issue. It's wedging the darn thing out, and then trying to get it back in. More hassel than it's worth most the time.

Thanks, Bub

Bub, I discovered with my 170 that rear seat R&R works alot better if you pull the seat back out first, then the seat bottom. I replaced the bolts and nuts for the seatback attach with hitch pins and clips, makes it real easy to remove the seat back first, then the bottom. Reinstallation of the seat bottom is a bit of a PITA due to the difficulty in lining up the holes in the seat bottom with the holes in the sidewall bracket (horizontal bolts). I'm assuming that the early 182 seat bolts in like the 170's.
Better yet, scrounge a pair of "middle row, divided" seats out of a 185, from someone who's ponied up the big bucks for BAS or Atlee-Dodge folding seats. I run just one of these on the RH side, makes getting to the baggage compartment real easy.

Hey Skylane:

Finally last year bit the bullet and installed these in the 182. Should have done it five years ago. http://www.fadodge.com/customseats.html

Here's how hard it is to R/R the rear seat in the Maule.

Well

Don't that just knock yer hat in the crick. Thanks for the pictures Yellowbelly. Is that a garage door opener in your hand... to open that big old side door.

I'm going to have to drag my sorry butt to a maule fly-in and check out the wares for sure.

Tim, I like those Atlee Dodge seats. Wow sticker shock  Sure are slick though. However just about everything in aviation is expensive.

My "60" 182 has 4 bolts, 2 in the side just under the arm rests, and they are a pain to get back in, and 2 or maybe three in the floor, fore and aft. Been a years since I had them out, "annual." Use a tool to line up the hole and the carpet, and the seat.

Thanks for sharing, spent 10 hours in a dump truck today  Nice to see airplane stuff :D

See ya, Bub

Those photos are the perfect size, YB. Nice work.

Hey what kind of plane is that? Tell me about it. How does it compare to my 170?

God no please. How do you guy's post that beating a dead horse thing?
Any way, I got my quick seat removal kit from Maule today. I ordered it yesterday, living 40 miles from the factory has it's advantages.
The kit includes that long bar with the two fingers on it, a plate that bolts to the top of the fuselage. It's actually two plates that the "fingers" slide into and the two quick release pins. Cost is $130 and there are two bolts that have to be R&R'd to install it. The normal Maule seats "fingers" are longer and bolt to the airframe with two bolts. Since the plate weighs less than a pound and I know from the AC on the other thread that 1 lb. is the cut off for being significant, I won't have to recompute the W&B  Zane thanks for moving this to the right place.

Zane

I won't tell you about my plane because you will want to run out and buy one, thus lowering my insurance rates and destroying the fantasy that we are a cadre of bungee jumping thrill seeker pilots who like to do ground reference manuevers with our wingtip in contact with the earth.

Besides, she ain't purdy. Closer to Medusa than Shakira. The only way I've found to make her more beautiful is through the use of distance. But she's a knockout compared to her three-legged sister.

BTW, the seat arrangement is KISS at its best. What to do with the removed seat? It makes perfect padding for your oversized cargo, keeping it off that big picture window. Throw in the crossbars and you have your seat back again at the other end when the cargo comes out AND, no W&B issues as the seat is there all along!!

Re: Maule back seat

I just stumbled across this post and am wondering if this quick seat removal kit is still a thing. I just bought a MXT-&-180 and I will be taking the rear seat out on a fairly regular basis.
thx.

Re: Maule back seat

It is! I just ordered one, also ordered the quick removal kits for the front seat. Not sure what the front seat ones are, but if the back is coming out fast then so should the front \:D/

Re: Maule back seat

Any chance you have pictures of the front seat quick removal? I have the back, it's about 3 minutes out and maybe 4-5 in and most of that is dealing with un-knotting seat belts.

Re: Maule back seat

Front seat quick removal is just 3/16” clevis pins with those little quick safety pins (linked below) rather than An3 with a castle nut. However that’s only at the seat-to-support joint, not the support-to-floor joints. So to pull the floorboards (only real reason to remove front seats) you’d still have to unbolt the seat support bracket thing.

I don’t have the backseat quick removal kit. Even without it, it’s only 2x AN5 bolts to remove backseat. I leave the seatbelts in to use as cargo straps. Super quick.

Re: Maule back seat

Yap, that's pretty slick. I saw they are making a rear split seat option now too. Didn't really see a huge purpose in it until this weekend hauling 2 people and a guitar out to the San Juans that it now makes more sense. Still has the upper and lower cross bars, just single seat.
