Maule M4 down in Montana
Debrief, share, and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others.
Interesting spin by the author on the aircraft type in this article. You rarely hear someone in the media describe a C-180 as a type "made for mountain flying."

The plane that crashed at Hungry Horse Reservoir on Wednesday afternoon was made for mountain flying.
A Whitefish man was killed when the plane went down in stormy weather in the Swan Mountains southeast of Kalispell.
The Maule "Strata Rocket" is a single engine plane that is well known as a "bush plane", which is popular for flying in mountainous terrain and higher elevations to backcountry locations throughout North America.
It can take off and land in less in 500 feet or less and is prized for its design for landing on backcountry airstrips.
Pilots affectionately call the "Strata Rocket" a "taildragger" for its configuration that utilizes a wheel to support the tail when it lands. It's lightweight at just over 2,300 pounds, and is capable of flying for over 500 nautical miles.
This plane that crashed had been in service since 1967, but that's not unusual for a specialized plane of this type.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Wow, no mention of "no flight plan was filed" or mis-use of the word "stall". Even workd in ":taildragger". he probably is a pilot. Good reporting. Too bad it's on such a tragic story.
