Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

McCauley Single Puck Disc Brakes

McCauley Single Puck Disc Brakes
I have an opportunity to buy a complete setup (used) including wheels for $1k. Is this an OK price?

Thanks

(I have McCreary 8.5 x 6" tires BTW, no idea if they will fit with the new wheels/brakes)

Re: McCauley Single Puck Disc Brakes

What brakes do you have now? I have friends who fly Pacers with the stock hydraulic drum brakes & they work just fine. No tire clearance issues either, which isn't always the case with Clevelands. Not sure, but I think the only approved clevelands for a PA22/20 might be the double-pucks. Univair sells them & has the STC. Unless you're having trouble stopping, I'd stick with the stockers. The exception might be to mount bushwheels, if their Pacer STC calls for "heavy-duty brakes".

Hmm. The stock drums in the Pacer give you only a few to several seconds of moderate to heavy braking, and then they are *gone*. Disks are the way to go.

I have single puck Cleveland's on my champ, and 26" airstreaks. They will lock them on grass. P.s per the ak Bushwheel stc, they are "heavy duty"

"Heavy duty brakes" seems purposely vague. I have single-puck Clevelands on my C150TD-- I suppose they could be considered "heavy duty" compared to the stock Goodyear brakes. Vague is usually better than spelling things out to the letter-- much less chance of getting tripped up by the fine print that way.

Hmmm, is this true? I have a pair of Bushwheels available to borrow for the hunting season, but am not ready to upgrade to double puck clevelands yet. I have single puck clevelands on the 170 - so does this mean that the Bushwheels will be legal with this setup?
FYI the Gar Aero STC specifically mentions that the brakes have to statically hold at full power, without regard to type of brake.

Not sure, when I did the paper work for mine, it had the upgraded hyd. brakes than what came stock, the old drum brakes so in my mechanics eyes the single puck Cleveland were HD enough for my airplane. It would be something to talk about with your mechanic who is signing it off. Ak Bushwheel also sells the stc for 50 bucks. Which is great and reasonable.

Re: McCauley Single Puck Disc Brakes

Yeah, that was the plan - buy the Bushwheel STC and put on my buddies Bushwheels - my mechanic thinks I need whatever brakes the STC requires...

Re: McCauley Single Puck Disc Brakes

I saw McCauley's come apart on one side, C185, jammed the disk. On 29" Bushwheels, about the 5th landing after installing said tires. The brake assemblies were like new as the airplane had ferry time only on land gear, the rest of its life was spent on floats. The old A&P asked at the time why in the Hell we were using those brakes (should have been our first clue). Luckily it occurred on grass so there was no damage but it was an interesting ride. After that, not so much a fan of McCauley brakes. I wouldn't put them on if they were free.
