Flew over Memaloose yesterday and noticed once again vehicle damage on the runway(ruts). The state of Oregon obviously has no interest in maintaining Memaloose. How about some of you Oregon pilots? Does the Oregon pilots association do work parties?
For anyone who has newer been to Memaloose, it sits on the edge of Hells Canyon. The threshold is on the edge of the canyon. Lots of places to camp and hike, and a very short distance to the strips along the Snake. This is a precious airstrip that we will loose if we don't take care of it .We did a workparty two years ago with a couple of Oregon pilots replacing the complete windsock apparatus. It was rotted away. We also smoothed out the worst of the ruts. Any one interested in helping out in the near future?
Thanks,

Great, Milo was was the one who drove the equipment up to Memaloose. He was great. I think maybe we should walk on the airstrip and figure out what we will need. Who's jurisdiction is Memaloose in?

Hey guys,
I was up there this weekend and there is the normal Deep Ruts in the road and a "Cookie" at the North end and a few tracks in the runway from a pickup but I didn't get any pictures

I am a member of the local ATV Club and there has been much talk about the airstrips in the area and the ATV club is keeping an eye out to make sure that the airstrips don't get tore up.
Eric--
I will work on the signs and see what I can come up with.

I talked to Milo and he gave me a connection with the forrest service. He had complained about the vehicle damage, and most important, the liability issue with the deep ruts. They mentioned that they would send a backhoe up to smooth out the ruts. The other thing would be to close the gate and post signage stating this is an active airport, no vehicles. I'm on the road right now, but when I get back, I will try to get a date when they will send the equipment. Then we can possibly coordinate a workparty at the same time.

I was at Memaloose two days ago. 600 feet from the southern edge of the runway has deep ruts from vehicles. Some deeper than 12 inches. Definitely enough to serious damage unsuspecting aircraft. I will now try to get the proper authority up there with a backhoe or grader to smooth them out. Maybe coordinate a small workparty at the same time.
