I want to start stripping the extremely weathered paint off my 170, and hoped to pick your brain if I could. What kind of stripper did you find worked the best for your project and what were the best methods for taking the old paint off?

robw56 Sorry, I just saw your message about paint stripper. I used some stuff made by Klean Strip called Aircraft Paint Stripper. You can get it in 1 gallon cans. Some auto parts stores carry it. I bought mine from an auto paint supply store. The best method I found was to brush the stripper on to small sections a couple square feet at a time and let it sit for about 5 minutes. You can brush on another section while you wait for the paint to start bubbling up on the first section you did. I always tried to have a section with stripper sitting on it while i was scrubbing another section clean. The whole process will go faster if you work this way. Use a small nylon brush to scrub the paint off. You may need to do a second light coat to get everything. After all the paint is removed from one section wipe it clean with a paper towel soaked in mineral spirits. Don't let the stripper dry on or it will be a pain in the ass to remove... you will have to re-apply more stripper to get things softened up again. I wouldn't use any scotch bright on the outside of the plane if you want to keep it bare alluminum/polished... the scotchbrite will scratch up the surface too much. I did use scotch bright on the inside of the plane though since I was painting the interior. MEK and scotchbrite works well for cleaning up the inside of the plane. Depending on where you live you might not be able to buy MEK. I live in CA and had to use acetone instead witch still works but probably requres a little more elbow grease. Be prepared for it to take a lot longer than you thought and use u more stripper than you thought. If you have any other questions just ask. Have fun!

Besides, airliners go by their flight numbers (TWA 800, etc) instead of N numbers I believe, the police rotors go by call sign ( "Police 4"), and the TV news rotors go by local TV station numbers ("TV...
