New Move, New(ish) Airplane!

For the last 3 and half years my family and I have been living in Okinawa Japan. I always loved keeping in touch with what was happening on backcountrypilot.org. I would comment when I could by mostly I just enjoyed seeing all of the awesome adventures and couldn't wait to get back and take part myself.

At the end of June my family moved back to the states and by the end of July we were moving into our new place in Fort Worth. I immediately set about the business of finding an airplane to spend everything I had been saving for since before leaving for Japan.

Yesterday I purchased my first ever airplane, N9077A. She is a 49 Cessna 170A. Her paint is worn and the interior neglected but she is all mine! I'm based out of Hicks airfield in west Fort Worth and can't wait to get to know any of you in the area and meet up at future fly ins.

Safe Flying!

Nice! I'm sure you'll love the 170! We have a 53 B model for our family of three plus our dog and take it on many family trips. I'm in the military also.

This was 11months ago when our daughter was 3 days old and before the restoration project.

Tried any Meguiar's or similar wax on it to get rid of some of that oxidation? Nice paint scheme, would be cool if you could salvage it a little. The bare wings are just going to need some elbow grease and man-hours.

I was thinking the same thing. You can probably get it shined up pretty good.

The 180 i picked up this spring had oxidation on it like that. I used Mothers wax on it with an electric polisher and it shined the paint up nicely. Not to new condition, but a lot better then what it was. Just takes some elbow grease and time. That is a cool paint scheme. Great looking plane.

Re: New Move, New(ish) Airplane!

Here's a past BCP thread that has a lot of resources and ideas for 170s: https://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/ ... -170b-7405

And one from the Int'l 170 Association: http://cessna170.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1969

Also, there's a 170 group elsewhere on this site that could use some fresh blood.

Cheers,

Re: New Move, New(ish) Airplane!

Thanks DP, I will definentely look into those!

I figure a little TLC and some elbow grease and she could look pretty good. I'm excited for the possibilities.

I'd think twice about that, you don't want to remove the protective crust.
Though you do need to keep on top of unpainted aluminum to prevent corrosion.

Re: New Move, New(ish) Airplane!

The seller is a good friend of mine. I don't know if he told you but that plane knows it's way around the Idaho back country. He had a great time with it for several years and I know you will for too.

Tim,
caretaker 1949 C170A N9174A

ps; did he get you to join the International Cessna 170 Association yet? A great resource for any 170 owner.

Re: New Move, New(ish) Airplane!

After almost two weeks since I brought home N9077A, I finally was able to take my family for a ride!

This was my son's first ride in a small plane! Despite my every effort to keep his ear muffs on, he just wasn't having it. He didn't really mind though. He just read his book, then took a nap.
