Mexican Hat Strip improvement S.W. Utah

Here's a little update for anyone interested. I have friends that own the San Juan Inn in Mexican Hat Utah. It is a nice motel/restaurant/resort on the San Juan River. Their names are Mark and Julie Sword. The website for their place is www.sanjuaninn.net/ Phone 1.800.447.2022 or 435.683.2220. There is river rafting there, hiking and a lot of history. The restaurnat serves a great breakfast and smoothies and milkshakes. Haven't had their lunches or dinners but I am sure they are good. They have large clean rooms on the river. They are great hosts. Mark just spent $1800.00 getting the runway bladed so it is in pretty good shape with lots of room for parking. Bring tie downs. I've been buggin him for a couple years to do this because I knew that it would create a fun place to fly to. Check UBCP for more info on the strip. My buddies and I chipped in $600.00 last weekend to help offset the costs and I know he would appreciate any support he could get from anyone else interested in using this strip and taking advantage of what this area has to offer. This gives us another good destination in the S.W. Great place to stay with a lot of fun and some of the most scenic flying ANYWHERE. It's probably about a mile walk from the strip to the resort, or you can call them the day before with times and intentions and they will try to make arrangements to pick you up at the strip. Just buzz the motel on the way in. Very limited cell phone reception in the area. You might be able to make a call while you are in the air. So there ya have it. Enjoy. Gary

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Grand Gulch hiking

I couldn't get the link to work, so I goggled it - here's the link that worked: http://www.sanjuaninn.net/

The web site says they're 20 miles from Grand Gulch. That is some of the very best hiking I've ever experienced. Lots of well-preserved petroglyphs, cliff dwellings, and antiquities. And no signs, railings, roads, or rangers - Just wilderness...and the aura of the ancients. I'd go back to Grand Gulch in a second. It's truly awesome.
Enjoy, Berk

Shortfielder, is that the airstrip across the river and up the hill?

My old stomping grounds! I was the San Juan river ranger for the NPS for two years, living in Halls Crossing. We put in at Mexican Hat and patrolled down to Clay Hills Crossing.

The strip is just on the edge of town. Coordinates are on Utah Backcountry Pilots web page. The one across the river you may be thinking of Az. Minerals. Pretty rough. Gary

This place sounds pretty nice!!! I can't wait to start my flying adventures in the West :D I about two or three weeks my wife and i are moving to Durango Colorado. This is just the sort of place I wish i could fly to when i'm pushing open the hanger doors.
Living here in Beautiful down town  Detroit for so long is surely the pitts when compared to SW Colorado. My wife will certainly like this little weekend adventure.
