I'm planning a trip to southern UT where a friend will pick us up at the airport. We'll be leaving the plane for a couple of days. Many small rural airports are unattended and lacking a security fence or personnel. Does anyone know if either of these airports have a full height security fence around them or just a cattle fence. I realize there are no guarantees either way.

Monticello is closer to our final destination, but is not attended and is out of town along the highway.

Blanding is 20 minutes further from our destination, but seems to be in town and have more people/businesses there so I suspect may be more secure.

Any feed back is appreciated.

You won't have trouble at either. Monticello has a new security fence.. actually everything there is new. I forgot how to get back in last time I left my plane there so I had to call the city. They have a new pilots lounge that is very nice. That city gets it.

Blanding is busier, has a repair station on the field and a decent group of airport bums hanging around their hangars when the weather is good. You can access the ramp pretty easy, no gate codes. They park 3 or 4 King Airs outside every night amongst the riff. FWIW.

Edit: Ive also heard that you can hangar overnight in the large city hangar in Monticello for cheap... I'd be interested to know if thats true.

Monticello was a good airport and secure

I called ahead and spoke with the airport manager about preheat. They have outlets at the north hangar where the pilot lounge is located. He was kind enough to proide an extension cord off of the hangar prior to my arrival for preheat.

The pilot lounge was newer and comfortable. There are lots of tie down spots on the ramp, but bring your own tie down straps and wheel chocks. I forgot to ask about overnight hangar fees. If your curious just call the main city number and ask for he airport manager. He was very accommodating.

Was a great trip. Two solid days of climbing with good weather and good friends.
