Moose Creek accident

I just saw this this morning. Condolences to family and friends. The passenger was from my area but the pilot/airplane information hasn't been released yet.

The Associated Press

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho — Officials in Idaho County say a gust of wind hit an airplane just as it was taking off from an airstrip in the Nez Perce/Clearwater National Forest, forcing the plane to crash and killing the pilot.

A second man on board was treated for minor injuries.

Idaho County Chief Deputy Jim Gorges tells The Lewiston Tribune ( http://bit.ly/LzNkpk) the men were taking off from the Moose Creek Ranger Station east of Grangeville ahead of an expected thunderstorm when a gust of wind caught the plane, causing it to crash and catch fire.

Gorges says the passenger, Anthony Dipaolo of Coeur d'Alene, was flown to the hospital in Grangeville.

Gorges says officials expect to recover the pilot's body on Friday. His name and hometown were being withheld while family members were notified.

Re: Moose Creek accident

t storms in the Mts are a bitch.... one year flying from McCall to JC there was one just north of Big Creek airstrip and my final into JC was the worst and scariest I've ever experienced with up and down drafts on final you wouldn't believe... Damn near got downdrafted into the trees.. those mountain storms can generate winds and turbulence from a long way off....you'd think Big Creek would be far enough away but not for me now...So sorry to hear...

I have camped at Moose Creek with a thunderstorm. The wind was from all points of tghe compass. Not good at all. In tose conditions it is probably best to spend a nother night. Take extra twinkies with you just in case.

Re: Moose Creek accident

This is extremely sad news. We met Jahan at Moose creek just a little over a week ago. He was very
generous in sharing his knowledge of fishing spots in the area and gave my son and a little impromptu fly fishing clinic on the Selway. He loved Moose Creek
and had been in there on fishing trips numerous times.

I know he had three kids, and my deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Re: Moose Creek accident

Very sad, my condolences to all invloved. The 180/185 club had several fun flyins there in the early eighties. I always enjoyed the camping and fishing. We started getting to many planes and the club quit going there, trying to satisfy the Forest Service to limit Moose Creek to small groups. Some years later we had a great flyin at two private strips south of there, Running Creek and North Star. Both challanging strips but beautiful areas, wish I owned one of them.
