Moose Creek Trip Report

A few of you asked about a PIREP for Moose Creek, Shearer and the Selway Area. Wagonwrench and I flew out of Grangeville this last weekend and camped at Moose Creek. The average snow line is about 6000'. Both Moose and Shearer are in great shape, dry and firm. It was quiet with no other aircraft there. Be forewarned that even though the OAT was about 62 degrees, Shearer at noon was dicey with erratic thermic conditions and a slight quartering tailwind landing upriver. I would suggest following the summer rules of early or late departures already. Thermals were active making the windsock move all around quite a bit with less than a 5 knot wind.

Moose Creek is flowing great though fishing isn't legal until later in the month and posted. There are ALOT deer and elk at Moose Creek. On our Monday morning departure Wagonwrench almost hit a whitetail that came running out of the trees probably about the time he reached 40 mph. He popped it in the air and missed. I think I have a video of it somewhere I will post soon. I assume it would not be as big of a problem when the strip gets busy.

The forecast was for a 50% chance of rain on our Monday departure and you can see from the posted pictures which 50% we got.

Its beautiful up there, enjoy! :D

Thanks for the pirep and pics!

I'm flying out to McCall Friday afternoon. Early Saturday morning, I'll fly up to Moose Creek, visiting some other strips along the way.
I'm planning on camping at Moose Creek Saturday night and heading home on Sunday.

Somebody should design a horn for our planes to scare off the elk.

If I am sucessful at making it through the snow to the put-in then we may see you Saturday night. Our trip has kinda fallen apart so it will be just my wife me and a buddy of mine in our kayaks. We plan to camp across the river from the Moose creek confluence.

Man that first pic makes me homesick. I was born and raised in a small town called Pierce. It's only about 35 miles from Grangeville. Thanks for posting those! Splashpilot I see your out of Columbia. I am hagared at Rio Vista O88 currently. We'll have to get together sometime.

Splashpilot, Is that green and white 180 yours? I use to have a 1955 painted like that, except mine was original and deteriorating. While in Johnson Creek with it once years ago, I met a guy with a fresh paint job just like it from CA, except it had a two blade prop back then. Just wondering if you could be him?

Hey Patrol Guy, nope not me at Johnson Cr. Yes it is mine. I bought it from a guy in Arkansas about 3 years ago then had the P-Ponk O-520 and the prop installed immediately. It had only 8 hours on it since the restoration so I don't think it was him either. Must be another one. And I haven't run into another green one here in CA yet, but it would be interesting! :)

Re: Moose Creek Trip Report

I'm Bearhawk049 just north of Jax, Fla. I should be flying the last of June. I'm building from scatch (11 years in June) After time is flown off, and few local trips made, next year this time Moose Creek is here I come. The plane has a 0-470M 240hp, 1300lb useful load. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Tks.
