Re: Most interesting runway obstruction?

The Alaska jet was below 50 knots on the landing rollout and still did this much damage, bears are dense I guess.

Yes, brown bears, especially coastal brown bears are really, really solid. And, this was a sow, so probably 600 poundish at this time of year...... A big boar would be well over 1000 pounds.

A good friend of mine went bear hunting on Kodiak. By himself....not smart. He shot a really nice big male. He had to excavate UNDER the bear to skin it......hadn't given that process a lot of thought. But, as a good sportsman, he got her done. BTW, this guy was on the Canadian Olympic Gymnastics team....not a wimp.

According to NBC, the bear strike will be repaired and flown out "in 2 days", don't know if that's realistic or not, that's just what they are saying in the news article.

ANY bear is solid!!! I hit a small black bear right in the butt about 3am on the way to work (hauling logs) one really dark and rainy morning in a Peterbilt at about 60, and it sent my head into the windshield and dislocated the front axle enough to make me get towed!! Never been so surprised in my life!!!! One second I'm blasting along, drinking coffee and listening to Jimmy Buffet, and the next second things are going to hell in a handbasket!!! I never saw him until I got out to see what happened!!!
