Yesterday I wanted to check out the results of the blizzard we had a few days ago. I went to the fuel pump and knocked the snow off the gas nozzle and hose when I opened the enclosure the reel is in. Knowing I use Mr Funnel when using my plastic five gallon jugs I rapped the nozzle but didn't squirt any 100LL on the ground. Went back to the hangar and poured the jugs in and this is what I saw-----ice that didn't go into my plane. Some of the shiny is fuel reflection in the Mr Funnel sump.

What's the back story? What were the temps when you fueled and for the past 24 hours? Could the ice have been in the jugs? Do you suspect contamination of the fuel pump nozzle? Were filters on the fuel lines between the tanks and the nozzle?

My own 300 gallon bulk tank is in a shed, and it's outlet is filtered with a supposedly water trapping filter. No water or ice anyway ever in my fuel that I know of. I have a Mr. Funnel but never use it for filtering when I pump out my tank, I figure it's already filtered.

I'm guessing it was in the nozzle since we had 50 plus mph winds and snow sifts in everywhere. We have a fancy super dooper filter on the pump. It could have been in the jugs since we were warm and then it went down to almost zero and I noticed frost on some of the metal things in my hangar. If I wasn't using Mr Funnel I would have squirted a bunch on the ground and looked in the jugs to really check them out. I've been to gas stations after a blizzard and seen snow up in the holder for the nozzle between customers and will blast a little out in that situation too. I do like the idea that Mr Filter suggests. If you are suspicious of the fuel supply, pump five or ten gallons through Mr Funnel and check it. If good go ahead and finish filling without using it since the bad stuff should be first.
