Re: MSO fire fighter missing something

I lived in Missoula for 19 years, what I remember most was that everything not bolted down got stolen. Stealing a wing is a new story. #-o

I believe most if not all the P2Vs are grounded now. Neptune is flying some BAE 146s now.

Re: MSO fire fighter missing something

There are still P2V's on contract. I'd say the wing is in for a bit of overhaul/repair. They had some issues with skin cracks in the past, so most likely there are some on that wing and it takes up lots less space and goes in a fixture much easier when it's off the plane. The government is trying to push the newer turbine and jet aircraft, but so far there are some pistons that still work.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

Re: MSO fire fighter missing something

Those have been decommissioned. The P2V's currently on contract have the jet engines in addition to the piston engines. Their days too are numbered.

Re: MSO fire fighter missing something

Those JATO P2V's are pretty cool. They fly in and out RDM quite a bit, not as much as they use to though. I watched one come in with a hydraulic leak/failure a few years ago. He fought to keep it straight after touchdown but wound up off the side of the runway in a cloud of dust then screeching sideways to a complete stop in the middle of the runway! It was spectacular! And if I recall correctly it was flying again a few hours later!

P.S. The access on those things is through the bottom! I wouldn't want to be the pilot trying to get out in a hurry after a crash  !
