Murphy Moose

Anyone flown a Murphy Moose?

I havent, but remember getting my but chewed for opening a float compartment at OSH a few years ago on their display. I should have asked first.

Seen some at greenville fly in.They had the turbine there last year.A young light french canadian flew in with his girl.They announce he was going out to do a demonstration.He was alone.After about a mile of not getting on the step he finally got on.It did back up nice though.His old lady was impressive.It reminde me of a seawind take off.The seawind speeds across the water and out the cove after a mile or so you can't see it and it musta flown,cause it buzzes by real fast and it's in the air.

Yes, I've flown a Murphy Moose with the Vendenyev 360 engine. Nice airplane in many ways, but somewhat lacking in rudder authority. I'd go get some flight time in one first.

It has a big cabin, it's allegedly pretty easy to build, and it performs very well in takeoff and climb. Great engine, and cheap.

The only negative I saw (and I didn't fly it more than an hour or so) was that it didn't have much rudder authority. That could have been the particular example I flew, but that one seemed to be pretty well constructed.

No I haven't flown one. But read through thier web site. Pretty interesting! Sounds like a performer.

Seems that the radial engine is pretty plentiful. Is that the same one used in a few of the YAK planes?

It's the same one that has reportedly run for several hundred thousand hours continuously in some powerplant in Russia somewhere....or so I heard.

Zane is right those Russian Radials are made to run next to forever and be easy to repair. Think about where they fly.

If you want the ultimate back country aircraft there is a AN-2 parked at our strip which I am sure the guy would part with at a very reasonable price. Last time he had it listed I think it was $75k.

You could disassemble your 206 and put it in the AN-2 along with a spare engine and still get off a short mountain strip.

Being fluent in Russian would be a plus.

I've seen some Yak-12/PZL 101's for sale recently. Looks like militairy surplus--kind of like an AN-2 only smaller with one wing. Has the MP-14 radial. Check out "taildraggers" or "STOL" on barnstormers. Crude and primitive looking but probably very effective. Be fun to fly one.

Speaking of AN-2s, we saw a beauty fly into Spanish Springs last Saturday after the air races. What a great big beast! I sure enjoyed watching it. I believe the part about loading the 206 inside of it is true, although you'd have to take the wings off first.

TomD if you are talking about the AN-2 at harveys, the owners are trying to get it licensed and having a heck of a time doing so. i would like to hear it start up.

Yep the one at Harvey.

I saw it fly at the Corn Roast summer of 2006. That was when it had the for sale sign up.

It looked like it took off in its own length when it was empty.

I saw one in bethel me a few yrs ago,very very impressive.For a big airplane it amazed me.Those low wing yaks get off as good as or better than most bush plane too.

They will probably never get another AN-2 certified in this country. Several slipped under the radar before the FAA woke up, and then they shut them down.

Why do you think that? Is there some problem with the design, or do you mean they will never issue a standard airworthiness certificate?
