Looking forward to seeing that one. I've been helping (not much due to fishing, hunting, hiking, etc.) him build his Moose. What a beast! In a good conotation of course. So far, my limited exposure to these planes has been very favorable.

What's the Yukon? Some offshoot of the Rebel? The "Moose" is a super-rebel, fitted (usually) with the M-14 russian radial. That's the normal power for a Yukon?
I knew a guy who built a rebel with a Lyc 320, I didn't see much difference between it and a 170 in capability.If he'd used a 360 that would be a different story.

Jr.cubbuilder i would stay with the 170 if I were you its a proven design with millions of flight howers many with clumsy student pilots at the controls. When is the last time you herd of a structural problem with a cessna .
My experience with the reble is it is prity good for a homebuilt but is just a little light in places prone to cracking around the doors for example. if you want a non certified airplane a smith cub is a much more proven design.

Makes me ponder the possibility of building one, parting out the C170 fuselage, and bolting my motor in it. That's mostly just a pipe dream though.

I thought the Murphy Elite filled the gap between the Rebel and Super Rebel/Moose? The Yukon looks like it's intended to be a more refined, sleeker aircraft than their previous models.

The Elite is basically a beefed-up Rebel. Enabling it to use the O-360.
The Yukon is more of the old Super Rebel lightened up so it will work well with the O-360 and up series engines.
I am currently building a Rebel and from the guys I know that have built them...they are a much better performer than a C-170. It may be close to a 170 with a 180HP though. The few Rebels that have been built with O-360's are super performers.
As for the cracking issues stated earlier...they have mods for that problem. It developed because the Rebel was originally designed for the Rotax and guys put in O-320's without beefing up the structure. As with any homebuilt they are a work in progress.
If you are interested in the Murphy products there is a builder site with lots of info on it.

I took a look at the murphy website the yukon looks to have solved most of the rebels flaws.what a great baggage door and fuel capacity! i think i will let someone else find the weak spots for a few years though.
