This post reminded me of a story that was in the 12/03 issue of EAA Vintage magazine,"Barnstormers and the Harrington Funk". That article was about a 1949 airshow in Harrington Delaware, where a fella named Earl Newton crashed a Funk Model B into a board wall -- on purpose!
There was one photo of Earl sitting in the Funk before the flight, wearing a football helmet, and a post-crash shot of Earl posing with his football helmet in one hand and a pack of smokes in the other. He was hoping to be included in Camel's "Men With nerves of Steel smoke Camels" campaign but it didn't happen. Both photo's of Earl show him with a look on his face just like the above photo--what are ya fixin' to do there Bump?
As well, there was a photo of the crash itself at the moment of impact, with the Funk's RH wing being cut off about even with the strut attach. Hard to believe a guy'd do that on purpose, with only a football helmet and a jaunty look to protect him. Scary.......
