My first solo XC flight

I'm getting close to that FAA check ride!

Completed my first solo cross country flight yesterday; an evening flight from Hillsboro to Corvallis and back.
No, it isn't an exciting backcountry landing or anything like that...but I'm really enjoying the time spent as PIC.
I have almost 50 hours in my logbook, but I have a couple more flights to complete before I can do my check ride.
Here's a clip from last night's flight to KCVO:

Congratulations. Don't be in a hurry to land in the backcountry. Actually, don't be in a hurry about anything. Worst way to make good aviation decisions is to be in a hurry...

True! Everything about flying is patience!

Want a crappy landing? Rush the touchdown, haha

Lots of people have sent this advice my way!
I am striving to find a balance between enthusiasm and patience. I really am having fun flying; and am interested to ride along with an experienced pilot on some backcountry landings.

Good for you! Glad you are having fun, that is what it is all about. My guess is that flying is consuming your every thought. Have fun!

Sewerzuk,

Congratulations on your progress. E-mail me at [email protected] and I will send you my free e-book, "Safe Maneuvering Flight Techniques." It will not help you with the flight test, unless the DPE is a crop duster, but it could make you think about the art of flying vs. the mechanical PTS.

One more thing to think about...

Backcountry landings should be performed in situations and conditions where the outcome of the maneuver is never really in doubt, like checkride maneuvers. If you aren't sure how it is going, that might be exciting...but it is bad airmanship. When you do start landing in the backcountry, make those landings boring. Exciting ones can be expensive.
