My flying Thread- Aktahoe's Cessna 180

Just figured I would start my own thread given I am addicted to this forum and fly about every day. I dont want to dominate the "where did you fly today" thread. Seems like there are a few here that should have there own thread given how much they fly and there own unique personality. Did I say I love this site?

Starting to feel like the plane is a glove again. Man she feels good with the new wing and engine. I know, I sound like a broken record. Today was a good day. Hit a lot of my North Circuit and ventured east into the desert for some slow flight landing work. The desert is a great place for that as you can take off and touch down again over and over for miles on end. Really got to feel the plane out today big time. Anyhow, to spare you on my writing skills I will just post some photos. Figure I will update this daily as I fly...

Here is one of my favorite spots, "Stampede South West":
Image

"Frenchmans Ranch" that many of you have been to
Image

The desert...I call this one "Dead Cow"
Image
Image

South of Susanville lake bed...Many of you have been here...
Image

Then things started to get a little bit serious but having only 12 hours on the new plane I thought it best to come back another day here.... #-o [-X
"High Top" ...a new one... ...doesnt count though...I only did a touch a go / slow drag
Image

High Top 2...just next to the one above...same goes here...just a drag and then pushed it over the edge for almost 170 mph down the other side... #-o
Image

And then back toward home to land at "Stampede North West" and found a lot of fish!
Image

Being chased by big browns and rainbows...wish I had my fly rod!
Image

And great parking...I need to camp here...CAUTION: dont land here unless you have big tires and can land short!
Image

All in all, a great day!

Wind is supposed to blow in the AM...seasons are changing

Kevin, good to meet you the other day in Sierraville. Hope to hook up for some more flying this winter.

Is the lake bed you mention S of Susanville Honey Lake or something else?

Cheers,
Greg

Hey Greg!

There are two lake beds above...one of them is Honey lake south of Susanville and the other "Dead Cow" is south east of Herlong flying toward Black Rock. Lake beds are in great shape! You could land your rans out there no problem. Very hard and smooth.

Kevin,

Looking forward to flying with you again. Please consider including lat. and lon. along with the photos of landing spots if you don't mind sharing. It'd be fun to check them out in Google Earth for sure (and maybe visit one day) :) .

thanks much,

Just north of Truckee about 5 miles...

Bumper- I will do my best to get some lat/longs for certain. Come fly anytime and I will just show them to you.

Went out this am before the wind really started to blow. Even got a new one today at my buddy "Duncans" ranch. Not certain why when you upload pics from your Iphone they end up sideways. Anyhow there are in the gallery but look funny.

Always a good day when you come home with mud on your wings...
Image

Ended up running around the reservoirs cleaning my tires...

Finally have my cameras charged up so hopefully we can get some good video going again.

Anyone around this weekend for some flying? Would like to go to the Mack fly in but wife is away until friday night so thats not in my cards. Looking to run the North and East circuits this weekend. Feel free to join in if you wish. Will depart KTRK around 8am.

In the EXIF meta data tag on every JPG, there is a rotation flag that indicates what orientation the photo was taken in. This becomes especially important in smartphones, which print that data flag with input from the inertial sensors. When you view those photos in Preview, or iPhoto, or whatever on your Mac/Windows, the software obeys that flag. Our photo gallery isn't so smart, so you have to make sure the image is rotated to the correct orientation with the EXIF tag telling it what to do first.

I fixed your photos in the BCP gallery by clicking the "Cop and Rotate" link.

Yep, that's it. Back when I was with Motocross, we had a two day test there before the Las Vegas Supercross. We drove all the way from Salt Lake to Honeylake before going back down to Vegas. I can't remember what year. Pretty nice area.

OK...... Sorry for the slight thread drift, Kevin. Just some small talk. :D

Re: My flying Thread- Aktahoe's Cessna 180

Kevin,

Those of us from RTS know that "dead cow" area as "Flanigans Flat" (from the railroad siding there). This is presuming we are talking about the same place, far east end of the basin, east of the ammo dump and Herlong. There are also a number of smaller dry lakes up in the hills S of there that are good landing spots. The Rans would be ok, but not sure whether I want to land the RV there just yet.

Re: My flying Thread- Aktahoe's Cessna 180

More slight thread drift. The MX is used some now but not like it was. I saw a for sale sign there last week. The guy that had that ranch before the MX had a hangar on the lakeshore and all of the dry Honeylake as a strip. Now he owns the mountain property where "Frenchman's Ranch" strip is located. "Dead Cow" strip is usually dry ( careful after wet weather) even if Honey Lake has water. It is years of wind erosion and smooth and hard. I havn't checked the dry lakes to the south on the higher lands for several years. With this drought they may be good now. (Newcome Lake and Spanish flat). Now back to AKT
