My Gravel Bar Cherry.......Popped!

Probably the single most landed (by airplane) gravel bar this side of the Mississippi. I made sure to ski up to it so all that practicing (playing) that I have been doing at home was not wasted. =D> Not that I needed to ski up to it anyway. It's huge!

Thanks to Gregory Swingle for the production.

Crzyivan 13,

Lots of room to turn down the river after takeoff. For tighter situations, consider staying in low ground effect and rudder turn down the river. Practice in an open field first. Don't let a tight river turn force you into a coordinated level or climbing turn load factor will not allow you to make.

Nice Evan! You sure you wanna get rid of that plane?!?!

I remember my first gravel bar landing. It was way more sand than gravel, sure glad I had big tires

Re: My Gravel Bar Cherry.......Popped!

Just keep the wing level in low ground effect and don't look at the wire. Look at the poles. If any turns need to be made, use the rudder to turn while keeping the wing level. On high recon locate any place the wire is too close to obstructions to comfortably get into low ground effect before going under. Make sure there is adequate room to zoom up before any obstruction coming out.

When going over wires, look at the poles not the wires. Clear the wing (watch the wire go under the wing) before making any turn.

The bigger the wire, the safer, unless it hangs way down in the heat of a summer afternoon. Don't go under small wires on wooden poles if there is a fence or other obstruction under the wire. It is much harder to be high enough over an obstruction and low enough under a wire than to just be in low ground effect. Too many considerations burn up the brain and make us neurotic.

After watching your Skywagon video, I'm pretty sure I do. (He said with uncertainty)

Re: My Gravel Bar Cherry.......Popped!

I have to admit, the wires scared the hell out of me. I have made low passes down that river many times before and never had the sight picture that made me comfortable. I made a low pass that day right off of the water, and right when I rounded the bend with the bar in sight I could see the distance from the water to the wires. I went around, and having seen all of it, I went for it the next time. It was an awesome feeling.

Re: My Gravel Bar Cherry.......Popped!

You want to know how any/every wire gets into the area and how any/every wire gets out of the area. Any change in direction requires guy cables angled to ground mounting. Wires can go over/under other wires.
