My horizontal stab damage
Debrief, share, and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others.

Yeah, 20 years of flying and I have never seem anything like this either. Now you can say you have.
All parts removed and ready for new. Hoping it arrives today.

That must have weighed several pounds? I'm amazed the wheels were able to throw it up high enough to contact the h.stab!

Bummer.

I knew somebody back in Arizona that got into a midair collision in the traffic pattern of an uncontrolled airport. He lost one side of the horizontal stab and landed safely. No one could believe it. I should of taken a picture. Half the stabilizer was mowed off with the other aircraft's propeller.

For the deployment I am on I gathered up all my flying DVD's to bring along with me to help me get through the flying withdrawls. The other night I was watching the original Big Rocks Long Props where they are playing hard on the river. I was shocked at many big rocks I saw flying in that video. I was putting my plane away one day after playing on some gravel bars and found the strut that supports the horizontal stab bent badly one side. I ended having to replace it. Only guess is it was a rock that hit it. Kev are you gonna make it to JC??

Yeah, like was said, that was no rock. I can fully see a rough chunk of concrete being grabbed by one of your big tires long enough to loft it a few feet in the air. Like old Albert used to sing: "If it wasn't for bad luck....." I hope you didn't have to buy a new one from Cessna.

Got new one from Skywagon city in Ontario Canada. $6700 for all parts and shipping...so far. Looks like it will be done before the big weekend coming up.

If it looks smooth, it might be. If it looks rough, it is...www.bigtirepilot.com ...www.alaskaheliski.com
Ouch! Makes my $6K repair from a moose collision (hateful bastards) on my truck look pretty paltry in comparison. I'll quit whining about it now.

Buy a big boat. You'll never worry about moose collisions again. In fact you'll look forward to them as something you can afford.

Damn. Yeah, mine is an International 10 wheel dump truck so it fared a little better. Probably only going 25 mph. Took the hood out, radiator, oil cooler and aftercooler. Repair will cost more than its worth, but WTF....I like the truck! Thinking about putting Bull Bars on this time.
No one hurt and some of the locals got a few steaks out of the deal.
