I see it in google maps. Small place, right? Like 8 miles long? Just show up and camp and buy access to the hot springs while there?

Yup, that's pretty much it. I tend to camp on the western edge of the Alvord, just south of the Alvord Hot Springs. If you zoom in on Google Maps satellite view, you can see the glider operation set up where I normally camp. A bunch of sailplane folk show up there every summer for a week or two of towed launch soaring over the desert and playing with the ridge lift along Steens Mountain. Backing my plane up to the edge of the desert puts me right against the scrub brush, so the dust only comes from the other direction.

Like all "dry" lake beds, you need to make sure the deck is really dry before landing. That alkali dust turns into REALLY sticky mud when it gets wet. When you walk on a wet area, you get 2" taller with each step as the mud builds up on the sole of your shoes. When it's really dry you just get talcum powder fine dust everywhere. Check out my footprints on the ramp when I stopped for gas on my way home last year. It takes a while to get that dust out of all the nooks and cranies of the plane. The same is true for the Dead Cow playa dust. It's just the price you pay.
