My old Mooney's on Barnstormers

It's kinda weird you know? It's a bit like running into an old girlfriend in a topless place. N2976L a 1967 Mooney M20C brown on cream. It's had a new engine put in for some reason. It had 1250 SMOH when I sold her in 93 or so and the spec sheet says factory new engine in '94. I sold it to a trust fund baby and I remember him calling me because it used a quart every 7 and he though that I had lied to him. This was the engine that had the wrong valve springs put in one cylinder at an overhaul before I got it. An old round engine guy figured out why cylinder #3 kept needing rebuilt every 80 hours or so.

Anyway she's had good care it looks like. New panel. Nice stack compared to the crap I had in it. Still has the Brittain wing leveler. I know she was in Weed California for many years in a partnership then went to Florida about 5 years ago. I think all of that stuff and the new interior and panel would probably have come to way more than the $17000 difference in what I sold her for and what they are asking. I put in the one piece windshield and the stainless brakes, turned the brakes around so they are inside the wells and removed the shimmy dampner. I put a lot of work into making the plenum tight and leakproof with new rubber and mounts. I hope somebody changed the scat hose. It used to smoke when you turned the heat on. Hehhehhehheh. I got skeert real bad one time when I turned the heat on going over the cascades and SMOKE started coming out the defrost vents. A-and I ain't askeert of nothin'!! I fixed up the nose gear door so that it actually closed and made the main doors close flush. That's a fast airplane there. I had the clock in the yoke rebuilt by a clockmaker. It kept perfect time. Anyway, makes me lonesome. I showed the ad to the missus and she got kinda wistful too. Lot's of memories in that old bird.
(I'd post the link but I think it's not Kosher because it's not mine. You have enough info to track her down on Barnstormers if you want to.)

Re: My old Mooney's on Barnstormers

Just happen to do a Google search on N2976L, my new to me Mooney (actually I bought her almost a year ago) and came across your post. Just thought I let you know she is still fast, doing great, and I've flown her just a little under 100 hours in 9 months and its been a blast. I'm taking good care of her and plan to keep her for a long time. She is fully IFR certified. I bought her from a good friend who did a lot of work (new panel, all new wiring, some interior work, etc). I have another interior and avionics upgrade scheduled for her next annual. If you don't mind I would like to know some more about her past history like how long did you own her, etc. if I could figure out how to attach some pictures here I would.

This silly thread made me go look up my old 1964 M20E Mooney (N1940Y). Kind of feel like I am stalking an old girlfriend. She is in Wyoming now and hope she has a good home. I flew that thing for nearly 7 years all over the US and even flew it to Fairbanks, Alaska from Longmont, Colorado. Lot's and lot's of fun! Great range, fast and sipping fuel at 8 GPH!
Had a crank shaft shear in half over central Utah in 1996 at 13,500', yikes! Glided 17 miles and landed in Green River- could not have done that with the airplane I have now.

Wow! Great to meet you HR. That airplane was my favorite out of all the ones I've dated. I'm glad she's in good hands. I've forgotten when the logbooks start. I know that I found the guy who lost them by looking back through the ownership string at FAA. I tracked him down and he got mad at me for asking. It's hard telling what happened. I suspect that there was an unpaid bill someplace.

When I picked it up in Van Nuys, CA the fellow who flew me down there to pick it up was watching as I started her up. When I turned the boost pump on he started jumping up and down and running the flat of his hand across his neck in wide eyed terror. Understand that this was after a full pre-purchase by a local FBO! It turns out that somewhere along the line the Dukes fuel pump that it came with had been exchanged for the one intended for the E model. Fuel injection. The pump was forcing fuel past the float valve in the carburetor. Somebody flew it home anyway (fuel pump off) and I called Dukes. They were not happy. They rebuilt it with the proper regulator springs in it and put the right sticker on it. All it cost me was FedEx next day air both ways. Dukes is a GREAT company.

We didn't have it long as the record trail will show. A couple years I think. We had a financial emergency that made it impossible to keep. I put well over 100 hours on it and took it into some unexpected places. Fairly short dirt and grass types of places. Folks just don't understand how big and efficient that wing is. We stuffed a lot of camping gear and a dog into the back seat and never got anywhere near aft CG. I sure wish there was a way to get another. I'd probably opt for an E model if I could.

Good luck and thanks for getting in touch
