Name of old strip? Near Stinking Water Ore. (pic)

I don't have a chart old enough to show this one, but I know one of you do. Thanks for any history about it.

Looks like it was a pretty good size airport. Wish it was my place! 8)

Re: Name of old strip? Near Stinking Water Ore. (pic)

I found that one on google-earth as well a while ago and figured it was just once a nice ranch strip... though now that you mention it, the size does lead one to believe it could have been more than that. Good question, for which I have no answer. Now start looking for giant concrete arrows in the area #-o

Looks like it was getting some use in 1999...

Choss: Thanks for the pic. Yeah, I remember when it looked like that. I used to fly by it back in the mid 1990's on a regular basis.

As for Giant Arrows:

Good find.

Those old strips fascinate me, and I love exploring them. We "gots lots" here in Nevada, and when I fly over them, if I can, I come back on the four-wheelers to see what shape they're in and on what land. Then, the real fun part is going back out to land on 'em. We usually bring a picnic lunch, sit on a tire to eat, and then walk around and kick rocks and pick up junk on the ground. Doesn't get better than that. 8)

Looks like remnants of WWII pilot training facility , my dad learned to fly on one of these after the war. Hundreds were built and adbonded in and after WWII all over country . Check Abaonded airstrips and little know airports ,they have a web site . Recent activity may have been Forest Service or crop dusters .As you fly along you can see remnants of these once active airfields no longer on maps. Some are OK to use - others not- I'd check with local airman or physically go out and check. If you can get your motorcycle or ORV up to 40 mph for say 400 + feet that's use able .

Here's another for you Oregonians to contemplate. Paste these coordinates into Google maps. 45.040047, -119.571345 It is actually called "Big" Rock Flat. It has never been on the sectionals that I know of. In the 70's the Forest Service had a 20 person fire crew that lived in tents across the road. They would fly in and out going to and coming home from fires in a DC3.

The local ranchers and hunters used it all the time I worked there from 1980 to 95. No body had been taking care of it when I moved there in 1980 so I put up a wind sock and shoveled and raked the ruts kind of smooth. I asked a local rancher with a cub how smooth it needed to be and he said to drive down it in an open jeep at 40 mph and if I could stay in the jeep that was smooth enough.

The east west runway had lots of bunch grass and was very rough when I moved away in 95 but people were still using the north south runway.

Grew up in Drewsey ( little town not too far from there), anyway a person by the name of Bob Carpenter used to own that ranch and he and his boys built the strip, he had a V tail bonanza i am pretty sure, he has long since passed but not sure now who owns it but can find out. we are talking about 30 yrs ago. jw.

It's not money that makes the Aircraft airworthy It's the mechanic, but its money that makes the mechanic work!!!

That sounds like a perfect day to me. I don't know if that's good or pathetic. :D

I just like tangible history. Giant concrete arrows, ghost towns, old rusty junk on the ground...

There's a reason I thrived in Kotzebue Alaska, and get homesick for Burns Oregon even though I've never lived there, just visited.

Simple mind I guess....

I spent the night on the couch at the Burn's FBO after coming home from Lake Owyhee. It was getting late and the Coast was about 1.5 hours home. Free coffee in the morning, car and a really cool manager who welcomes pilots.

While we are on the subject of old strips in Eastern Oregon, I've found multiple locations that appear like the picture below. With no good imagery to prove its a strip or not. What do ya'll think, strip or not?
