NASA Tests ELTs and Demonstrates Cessna Gear Strength

Cool video of a test of 4 different ELTs by NASA Langley. They used a 1958 Cessna 172 for the test.

This video will also sell you on shoulder harnesses, if you don't have them already.

I've seen a much older version of that testing at the same facility. Great footage, thanks for sharing.

Kind of sad watching the 172 get destroyed. When you search the registration it doesn't seem like it was a ramp mummy, looked pretty clean in 2008. Test must be fairly recent. Doesn't make much sense why they would be testing main gear that is no longer used, or testing no shoulder harness. Old news.....kind of weird

Opps missed the elt part....

haha maybe we could send it to them as further field testing research?

on a serious note that was a great video! I do have shoulder harness's and am now very glad for it! I must say I was very impressed in he slow mode how little movement there was in the fuselage. I would really have expected in a hit that great for the fuse to flex/buckle a whole lot more than that.

Gosh, I haven't landed that hard in quite awhile! :)

It surely does remind us how important shoulder harnesses are--and yet, people will still pay plenty of money for other things instead.

I witnessed a extremely hard landing of a Cessna 170A on a short Mountain strip in Oregon, it was amazing how flexible the landing was and how hard of a hit the airframe Took and was in relatively good shape.
