I went from Providence, RI to Montague, CA two years ago. The Rockies did not bother me. Oh did I mention that I was flying a 182B with a nice heater. Offer to stay here is still open if you go south then east.

On my trip west in the 182 I stayed at Patrole Guys' place the first night then at 180 Marties for second. Marty is a single guy so Patrole Guy got the award for better food. I mean his wife did. I bummed my way across the country, not one night in a motel room and only bought four meals. This site made flying much cheaper.

Just keep us informed. Epics are fun.

If you come through NE Oklahoma stop by OK18 (Grande Isle) and you can have the hanger apartment for the night.

http://www.airnav.com/airport/OK18

Give me a call or text (918) 798-9053 to check on the runway as we have has big time snow/freezing/thawing/rain/snow

I brought my Maule back from Huntsville, AL in January (VFR). We came across the South to Phoenix then North to Boise and across the Blue Mtns, then over Stampede Pass. Got between a Low and High From Phoenix to Boise and was doing about 180 mph over the ground.

We were going to go to S. Cal and up the coast until we looked at the weather and winds.

I am guessing you are going to get less chance of ice on the southern route.

Re: Need Advice Flying PA11 from WA to FL Next Couple weeks

Ok, so as I figured it has been very slow going. I've made it 400 miles in 3 days in some real cruddy wx but am making progress none-the-less. Each day is simply jumping airport to airport while watching for wx windows. I have thus far flown from Spanaway Washington (near Tacoma) down I-5 to Portland, east down the gorge, and now south to La Grande Oregon where I am tonight. Tomorrow hope to make it to Boise and then make a decision. Continue to Pocatello then down Bear Lake then across to Wyoming, or continue south down I-15 into southern Utah and to Arizona. As always, any input is greatly appreciated.

I looked at my logs and I was wrong. I came up to Albuquerque and stopped at Double Eagle before hopping to Seattle.

From Pocatello to Cedar City is not a bad route ( weather permitting) .

Weather looks like crap beginning at Alb. and Eastward right now, however.

Good luck

Tomorrow looks pretty nasty in Oregon. If it were me and I got a window in the next day or so I would think South to Nevada (the only clear WX state) to AZ to the I-10 and then go east to Tampa. The problem is getting out of Oregon the forecast is icing, turbulence, and MTOS. Hopefully the trip East will clear up by the time you get to I-10 because right now it don't look good. Be careful out there Tedd!

Tedd- Things don't look so good in La Grande from here (I'm in Olympia). I just took a look at; weather.unisys.com, it is a good forecasting site with different models available. It looks like possible snow in La Grande tomorrow, thru Saturday and Sunday. If you can make some progress today going due south, it will pay. Going East in the next week doesn't look good. The next few days will have significant precip and winds 15-20. The models show the next clearing in the eastern oregon region extending down thru Nevada on Feb 8. It looks like low temps and precip for Idaho, Utah, Wyoming for the next week.

Hoping for some good weather for you. Be safe.
Regards, Don

I talked to Tedd this morning...he was in Burley, ID and planned to make it to the Plateau...Rock Springs, WY today. It looks like tomorrow should be even better weather. Not really the best window of weather for a trans-continental flight.

I got an email from him this am. Been fighting weather, in Rock Springs, WY now. Said vis. is good across the Rockies so far, 25kt headwinds, though. All is well.

I just checked in with Tedd and he is in Cheyenne Wy. Forecast looks good for the next 48 hrs. He is in good spirits and the winds have been kind to him today. 90 hp. cub... you gotta love it!

Re: Need Advice Flying PA11 from WA to FL Next Couple weeks

I missed Tedd yesterday, but just talked to him this morning and he just landed in Decatur, Alabama because of ground fog. Tuesday he made over 600 miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming to his Dad's home in Tennessee. He is hoping to make it to Tampa today, and he will update his post. I can't wait to hear more details...this is quite a trip for a cub in the middle of all this fast changing winter weather. His phone battery froze over the Rockies, so it was a quick conversation.

In hind sight, would the southern route have been fewer days. A strait line is not always the fastest or the safest.

Re: Need Advice Flying PA11 from WA to FL Next Couple weeks

I thought that might have been a better route, however, there were major rain and snow storms through Calif , Nev and Ariz. So I'm not sure. Tedd has been able to keep moving almost every day. He got held up in LaGrande and Baker City, OR for a couple days...but has kept moving ever since.

Re: Need Advice Flying PA11 from WA to FL Next Couple weeks

Just got off the phone with Tedd...he was at Tampa International waiting for his commercial flight back to Seattle. Plane safely secured in the hangar. He said he pushed it 650 miles yesterday, making it from Decatur, AL to Tampa. I think he did a great job of flying a 90 hp Cub across the country in the middle of winter. Snow stretching from Texas to the Carolinas, mid West to the East coast. Glad to see it a safe and successful flight!
