Need your ideas

So here I am half way through a Long Island ice tea and I have a ?

To the east and west it is CAUV, Pacific City and Madras. Here it has been IFR and at KTTD, KPDX . I am thinking about a hay field strip. Can pilot X get an IFR clearance in class E air space from a hay field?

The man doesn't know if IFR pilot X can see the sky or not. So what can happen if IFR pilot X was to take off from a hay field ( you can see the sun through fog) and be gone.

Just asking???

Re: Need your ideas

The regulations say that you must be able to takeoff and climb to controlled airspace or to vectoring altitude IN VFR conditions.

If your field is fogged in, or you would have to climb into IMC, you can't launch without a clearance, and ATC isn't going there.

Re: Need your ideas

Also if you are 500 ft agl after takeoff and have to put the plane back down, is you downward vis good enough to pick a good place to park it?

Just a thought

Re: Need your ideas

If you see the sun through the fog just get her off the ground and then you will be legal once up. If a neighbors cow just happened to get through the fence and you hit it, you have a lot of burger in the fridge and some splaneing to do to the feds. Now if on the other hand it is the neighbors 11 year old girl and her friends, then you may spend a considerably long time in prison.

Why are even a bit worried about it

Think ATC will issue a cell phone clearance for a hay field? I know ATC will issue a clearance from a remote non towered field. It sounds like your saying a hay field clearance is no going to happen?

Not a chance. I have departed Troutdale a dozen or so times with a 500' vis in fog. Not going to come back and land. If the fan stops it is go slow, don't stall, and cross your fingers.

Re: Need your ideas

It's simple. ATC won't give a shit where you take off from as long as they have a general idea based off a known location for them. We did it all the time down in Kalifornia dealing with Oakland Center, and up north we just didn't bother talking to anybody.

Tell them you're 15 miles south of so and so airport at a private field, I want clearance direct to YYYY intersection and from there, whatever.... And then get your clearance and void time, and go.

Re: Need your ideas

Yeah you should be able to do it, like Gump said. The first couple of times, I'd call whoever would be your point of initial contact and tell them what you are doing. That way they can tell you anything they may want to see done as well as have a heads up as to who and where you are and what you are wanting to do.

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Need your ideas

But, again, make absolutely certain that your answer will be "Yes, I was in good VFR until I entered the clearance. Regardless of what you could see out the window :^o

Remember, until you are on a published segment, you must maintain VFR, so either one mile or three, depending.

Re: Need your ideas

Often they ask if you can maintain your own terrain and obstruction clearance to XXXX altitude. You say yes and it's on you! Doesn't mean you have to be VFR!

Except that it's not legal to operate in CONTROLLED airspace in IMC without an IFR clearance. So, yes, if you can get into your clearance while remaining in Golf airspace.....which generally means staying really close to the surface.......

I just want to make sure you aren't pretending that you're IFR in the same airspace I'm pretending to be VFR. #-o

Re: Need your ideas

Exactly. On the ground in Golf airspace when you get your clearance and void times, you are legal to operate IFR as directed by ATC. From podunk airstrip or Farmer Tim's alfalfa field, your clearance is your permission.
No different than getting a pop up clearance while flying.

But you're on your own to maintain terrain clearance until you're up at MEA or vectoring altitude.

Re: Need your ideas

It was foggy again today at my house when I left for the airport.

Close up of the field I'm working on buying. In negotiations with the farmer on a runway. The farmer has 9 years left on a lease.

Gosh it was beautiful today. I got the oil and filter changed too. Now I am ready to head south in about a week.
