New Cessna 180 Owner

Finally!!! Its been several months since I smashed up my plane - and today I've joined the ranks of Cessna 180 owner (the plane I've wanted to own since I took my first lesson years ago). This smile on my face to starting to hurt!

Re: New Cessna 180 Owner

That's awesome! That was based in Erie for a long time nearby and I looked at it quite a bit, seems like a good plane with a, shall we say, storied past. Not sure if you bought it from Jason at Vector or if it was at an intermediate owner between him and you.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine!

Yep that is the plane - I did deal directly with Jason.

Congrats man! So great!

Good news is there are no mods to spend money on for the Skywagon.

Hahaha I know I was just thinking - if only there were some mods I could add to spend what little money I have left. I'm sure if I look hard enough - maybe I can find a few  I just need to stay off your site and I will be alright... ok who am I fooling I've got it memorized! I'm sure I'll be giving you a few calls with questions. I've already got a list - as a matter of fact I have a few boxes with parts already down at the hangar.

Re: New Cessna 180 Owner

I hope a set of BAS seatbelt are in one of those boxes! That should be the first mod if it doesn't already have them.

Congrats on a sweet looking airplane!

Thanks Kurt - it does have 4 point shoulder harness belts.. but not the BAS seatbelts, they are not inertia reel belts.

Welcome to the club man!

As others have said, that BAS harness is a must. That being said, have fun, take lots of pics and enjoy the new wagon!

Re: New Cessna 180 Owner

FWIW I wouldn't spend the $1400 to upgrade your 4pt fixed harnesses to BAS, I don't think it's worth it. I had the hooker harness style in my 170 and the BAS now in my 180.... I actually liked the harnesses in my 170 better. My BAS harnesses don't seem to be all the way tight even though the reel is fully retracted, could be because I'm tall and use the aft hole in the seat rails, I'm not sure. I also hate the style I have that has the lap belts attached to the shoulder belts (I know you can get the other style). I just don't feel any safer in the BAS harness compared to a fixed harness. At least with my old fixed harness I could make it all the way tight if I wanted to, not so much with the BAS. I know that goes against everything you'll ever read on this subject here.... just my opinion though.

Re: New Cessna 180 Owner

I did not see that he already had a harness, guess I got excited and didn't read again! It is definitely not worth the $1,400 plus labor to upgrade an already good four point to the BAS. It is a good system but not if you have something there already.

The airplane that I am getting my high performance, complex and seaplane rating in has the BAS harness and just like you said, it doesn't feel tight. Like you I am also operating from the last stop in the seat rail. The BAS harness is nice when you have stuff in the back like cameras and other things so you can get to it. I don't have a need for the harness to be really tight as it already reels. That stops you from hitting your head on the dash or v brace.

Again, enjoy!

I agree that if fixed 4 point harnesses are already there, it's not worth replacing them. My only concern with fixed harnesses is whether I could pull the flap handle from it's lowest position, and I don't think I could--the BAS harnesses allow that, and also allow moving around more. Since I've only flown 2 airplanes with them, mine and the seaplane trainer I took my SES training in, my limited experience has been that the inertial reels lock up really quickly when necessary--maybe a little too quickly in moderate turbulence, or even in a whomper landing (yeah, I still do those every so often  ).

Re: New Cessna 180 Owner

I'll add my 2 cents... The first thing I did to my wagon was replace the fixed harnesses with the BAS. I had fixed harnesses in my previous plane, they were fine but I always wanted to have a little more freedom of movement especially to grab flaps. The BAS is the mod that I use and enjoy every single time I fly, and I would spend the money again in a heartbeat.

While I'm spending your money... You will also need an MT and some Bushwheels!
