NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

Hey all you VETs out there that are eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. As of October 1st you will be able to use your benefits for flight training other than at College and University programs. =D> Great if you have always wanted to add a rating. It is a little vague , as it came out this past February.

so far up to 10,000 per academic year at a VA approved school. Part 141? In my opinion, the clear winner is the option to attend a collge/University program. you can get all tuition + housing allowance + "fees". So university's/College that have caught on are now packaging the flight portion of the program as average completion costs fees. You can receive up the in state tuition and Fee Max for your state. So like Michigan i can get up to $19,000 of flight training fees in per term/semester, a year. so like $40,000 in flight training in addition to tuition and housing.

I know I have seen Tadpole on a few forums related to this subject. My only question is how much benefits does the option of going to a part 141 school, use of my Post 9/11 GI bill. Also, what is determined as an academic year as the VA is concerned. Would be nice to time it right and get a Instrument, then Commercial paid for as close as possible. :D

NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

Man, that would've been nice in '99. I spent my GI Bill on an engineering degree. Now I have to pay for flight training myself.

Re: NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

In a University program, Chapter 33 of the GI Bill will now pay for tuition, books, housing, AND fees up to the maximum amount any program of its type in that state costs. In Minnesota, that has been up to $37,000 per semester for flight training fees. We're not real sure what the new Obama amendment is going to do to this program, because final regs haven't been implmented yet.

In any case, the GI Bill is now more generous than it has ever been. Certainly more so than when I used it in the early 70s.

There is a time limit, depends on how long and which Chapter you fall under.

Snort!!! I think the funds for Civil War vets is all gone... Especially you guys who served on the H.L. Hunley

And if they did allow flight training, it'd be in a Wright Flyer.

Re: NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

Okay, as far as 2.0...no funding is approved until Oct 2011. It will include PPL and beyond, something new. 9/11 currently only works for flight training for IR and beyond...60% reimbursement.....for those who TRANSFERED from the normal Montgomery GI Bill.

Anyway, as 2.0 is concerned, the VA hasn't released all the details, but it will be all certs and ratings, at a Part 141 / VA approved flight school. College degree or not...and they will pay all costs up to 10k a year.

Here's a link to the approved VA flight schools in the U.S.
http://inquiry.vba.va.gov/weamspub/buil ... riteria.do

Select Flight Schools under "Program Type"

I'm no expert, just a guy who's trying to decide if it's worth the chance to go for it all and fly for a living using my VA benefits to pay for as much training as I can...so I've done alot of research, keep up on the news, and stay in touch with several 141/VA schools.

Re: NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

Post 9/11 Chapter 33 WILL pay for PPL training, IF you're enrolled in a University degree program which requires the pilot certification. In this case, PPL is simply considered part of the required flight training to achieve the degree.

That logic won't work outside the university flight training programs, though.

As I said, this new version of the bill still has some unknowns yet, but the Chapter 33 benefits have been HUGE for aviation, and we believe they'll continue to be in future under the new version of Chapter 33.

On the lis.t of approved schools given, look up University of Minnesota, Crookston, and check out the "Fees" available: $37,808. Those "fees" are what our students have available for flight training.

Re: NEW flight training allowance GI Bill 2.0

Correct, I neglected to point that out. I had lots of people tell me that when I transferred to the Post 9/11 Bill that I couldn't do any flight training unless it was a degree program, and that isn't true. Those that transferred from Montgomery GI Bill retain the normal 60% reimbursement for any training beyond PPL just as before. But now that's changing to what sounds like a better deal coming this October. Only time will tell though, as you mentioned, details aren't out yet.

We've got a student right now who's enrolled in the Chapter 33, and just completed his PPL. GI Bill paid for all the flight training. If anything, we're thinking this new bill may be slightly LESS generous than Chapter 33 has been.
