new life for old airstreaks

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

new life for old airstreaks

I had these really old airstreaks, weather checks, cord spots and general
speaking a mess.....had read about someone using bedliner on tires...
So off to NAPA got a quart of Herculiner paint on stuff. Washed mounted rubber real well, when dry wiped them down with thinner... Brushed on two light coats with extra on bad areas, sidewalls too. (Stir liner very well and often)let dry to tacky between coats...Let them cure for couple days.
Put them on cub and went out over the next few days trying to beat them
everyway I could...Gravel, Rock,Shale, and Blacktop. I thought they might be really grabby on pavement as rough texture...but no more than before.
SO as for a this experiment goes I'd give it a 9.5, I am truly amazed, they are still soft and cushy, look good...no they look great! I have now found out there is a smooth texture version of the material....Best $33.00 I've spent in many-many years. Will have to see in 100 landings how things are, but as it stands this stuff seems bullet proof.....sure beats shoe glue hands down.

The Good Lord does not deduct those days from our alloted quota, spent fishing, flying or with our Grandchildren.......

I'm still in denial :D You say it works, so it must. I would have lost that bet.

Didn't people used to use ":tire dressing" back in the old days? Same stuff maybe?

Sticks like goop !!

As for the paint on Herculiner on my airstreaks..... they have done very-very well. I had put them thru the wringer for about 25-30 hours of hard rock, gravel, mud, shale and every thing else prior to engine out landing. (loose term)

The stuff holds up to more than I WISH I could tell you as they still look great and rest of my poor lil. bird looks like ...well you know what I mean.

It did fly again, slung under the old huey from about a mile out it didnt look too bad....perhaps the last time it will ever be in the air? still unsure if I want to rebuild.... ran into another guy who had his spayed by bedliner company with smooth coat, he too said they were doing great. ( the rough coat has it's advantages)

will post some pics when I get time to figure out how? am healing up pretty good and looking at replacement parts and other birds, think I'll buy an old t-cart, champ or chief till I can get mine back togather, ski season
now and it sucks I'm grounded....best time of the year for playing in the hills. Have some things I'm selling to assist in rebuild and temp. wings, so check out adds...have gar-aeros, cargo pod and will be putting other stuff on as well. and dont forget the lot on beautiful Lake Clark! You know you want it!!

Take Care...fly safe, wave as you go over!
