New video flying Stoots IO-370 c170B

Here’s another first video after completing the IO-370 swap on my 170B , had some issues with my audio cord for headset audio, but got some decent footage

What a rocket ship! Looks awesome!

Maybe I missed it but you never mention how heavy you are and what the DA is. Would be helpful to help understand your performance figures. You also don't mention if you have wing mods?

Most importantly where do I get that dope Cessna 170 Sweatshirt you are rocking in the thumbnail?!?

Yes, admittedly I was slacking on the details to alot of it. I was full fuel, solo, around 1800lbs, and field elevation is only 500ft here, I didn't record the DA but it was a nice cool day, so all things helping for sure. I have the Sportsman stol kit, 29" bushwheels, (VGs are going on when I get some time). I just completed the engine break-in phase and am hoping to get some different stats with heavier payloads to get more info. I wish I knew where the shirt came from, a friend at the airport gave it to me, he had a 170 back in the day. I'm sure it came from an airshow in the 90's.. :D :D

Re: New video flying Stoots IO-370 c170B

A suggestion for anyone considering one of these conversions: Retain the fuel manual primer. Without it, if your battery is dead, you can’t start that engine.

You could carry a jump pack, of course, but those can die over time if not maintained too.

A while back, I was scheduled to do a flight review in one of these. Battery dead. Owner said oh well, we can re schedule. I pointed to the manual primer, which he operated, I got out and propped it, and we got the FR done.

good call.

Thats smart, yes one thing I have thought about is, being high compression and a lightweight prop is already a bit of a pain to hand prop, but add in that as well, it could leave ya stranded somewhere.

Nice airplane, thanks for the video.
I assume the IO370 its heaver than an O360? Do you have ballast on the rear?

Hey Larry I’m pretty sure the lycoming 360 & continental IO-370 are similar in weight. Small Differences in weight if they’re carb vs. fuel injection, but overall close. I think the 390 starts to jump up a bit but I’m not as familiar with that. I do not have any ballast as my current cg is setting right at 40 and landing and takeoff trim feel pretty good

Re: New video flying Stoots IO-370 c170B

In my experience, these 170Bs with four cylinder Lycoming (or clones) are some of the best performing, nicest flying back country machines out there. A good Super Cub will beat them, but not by much, and not with two up and a lot of gear aboard.

Their primary limitation is fuel, but in the Lower 48 there’s lots of gas stops.

The IO 390 Lyc is an angle valve engine, and they are all equipped with mass balancers on the crank….30 to 35 pounds heavier than an O-360 or parallel valve IO 360.

Have fun with that thing. What’s your empty weight?

Thanks for the additional info. I only ask because the winter vs summer performance difference in my stock 170 is pretty comical. Solo and light on a 30 degree morning and I start thinking I can squeeze into places I shouldn't haha.

Bummer about the shirt. When you become Youtube famous you can make a run of them!!

I couldn’t agree more, it’s a totally different airplane, doing what I want to now. I had a lightweight alternator & B&C starter before so I picked up 40lbs in the swap…. But overall I’m happy with it. I’m sitting at 1425lbs without the backseat…. Otherwise still a full interior, 29” heavy tread bush wheels, sportsman stol with quasar lights, Attlee lightweight battery. Stoots obviously shaves weight with hartzell trailblazer, lightweight alt & starter. I still could pull some things out and shave a few pounds here or there…

I agree, I still have the small stock tanks. And it’s not limiting me here, but definitely a factor when fuel isn’t around every corner…

Yea I hear you, I definitely was the exact same, it was two different planes based on the DA and gross weight.. HAHA, Deal. I do need to get some quality photos of it so I can replicate it!

It would be an understatement to say I’m jealous of this bird. Stoots conversion is sweet. And it looks like WV mountain flying is nothing to scoff at! 8)

I met Dave Stoots at the Airmen show a few years back. What a character. I wanted to just casually BS by asking a few questions about the STC but he’s…how to put it? A little aggressive in conversation  He set me straight on any misconceptions I had about anything.

I called him when I was considering his STC. He was super generous with his time and I learnt a lot. Can’t knock that attitude myself.

Haha yes he’s passionate!! He was a huge help during the process, always answering questions and giving tips. There were never any short phone calls. He has definitely put some time into making some great stuff for 170’s and I have to give him props, it’s everything I wanted it to be =D>

Thanks so much, it’s finally becoming the plane I wanted and it’s been fun to spend the time building it. Yes there’s a good amount of WV strips and places I can now go explore with the added performance! 8)
