Newport City, Oregon ( KONP) dep crash

Does anyone have information and/or analysis relating to the crash this afternoon in Toledo next to KONP?

Major tragedy for GA.

Thank you for any comments.

Oh... ok. I hate these crashes and the subsequent search for information as you try to rule out your friends' involvement.

Newport City, Oregon ( KONP) dep crash

Very sad deal. Unless uthere are extenuating circumstances you should never go straight down into the ground! Glide. Two years ago while in California, I was out with BigJohn, Littlejohn, and Doc. We went to a dry lake bed and turned our engines off and made dead stick landings. It was a real eye-opener and a lot of fun. Y'all should do it.

I did not see it posted anywhere. That was a custom paint job from on an RV-10 these folks had. Again, I could be wrong and I hope like hell I am wrong. Great people and I just hope I am wrong and it is not the RV I think it is......

Re: Newport City, Oregon ( KONP) dep crash

KONP FBO this morning said they have been told not to discuss the crash.

I have several thoughts which are on hold until the news is fully published.

Thank you everyone for providing input. Please continue to update if comments are desired.

Re: Newport City, Oregon ( KONP) dep crash

The pilot, Douglas Nebert of Newport, stopped by my (city owned) hangar a few times. He moved in a few years ago and has flown regularly since. I did notice he had engine trouble several times during run-ups and departures/arrivals.

Tragedy beyond belief. New information from local newspaper.

TOLEDO — A 51-year-old Newport man and 4-year-old girl were identified Sunday as the two people killed in a Toledo plane crash this weekend.

The pilot, Douglas Nebert, of Newport, and his step-granddaughter, Zoey Wahl were killed in the crash. Nebert was a member of the Newport Municipal Airport Committee.

Zoey's mother, April Gleason, 34, of Seattle, is recovering at a Portland area hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time, the Toledo Police Department said.

According to witness reports, the small plane was flying low when it banked, and then nosedived straight down onto Georgia-Pacific paper mill property Saturday afternoon.

Authorities believe the engine stopped working as there was no sound when the plane dropped. The plane was headed to Seattle.

The National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration and Toledo Police Department are investigating the incident.

Update;

The FAA has yellow taped the aircraft hangar of the accident aircraft on the South Ramp of Newport City airport.

KONP fuel has been shutdown and is being analyzed. Not sure if fuel is NOTAMed.

Re: Newport City, Oregon ( KONP) dep crash

It is hard to believe I had taken off from Toledo two hours before the crash, and had been sitting at the BBQ place where all of the eye witnesses were, eating some BBQ prior to that.

Its horrible this had to take a four year old's life, as far as I can tell, complete negligence by the pilot. Simply horrible.

For the guy that keeps his plane there and lives there part time, he should know its just Newport, not Newport City

I address the Municipality as City of Newport (and/or Newport City if within context). Seems respectful to me.
