NORSEE Letter

Not sure if you'all know about this one... but its kinda cool in a geeky kinda way.

I've been putting a lot of CO detectors in the birds I've been restoring. I like the Guardian product.

Back when I did my first restoration in 2008, there really wasnt any basis for this other than a FA. In 2017, the FAA issued what they call the "Non Required Safety Enhancing Equipment" or NORSEE letter. A bit silly? Perhaps... but for those of us who like things neat and tidy and ducks being in a row, its kinda cool.

At any rate, here is one of the Guadians I install: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/aero451-201.php

And the NORSEE letter.

Silly on the FAA's part? perhaps. Silly on the Mechanics part? not at all.

I've always maintained (no pun intended) that as a general rule, it is fairly difficult to find a really good grass roots mechanic, it is equally difficult to find a fairly punctual mechanic. Good and fast? nearly impossible, when you find one, keep him at all cost. Your life may depend on him. If cost falls very deep in to your selection, you have chosen the wrong pastime / hobby / career.

I find a similar parallel with respect to paperwork. There are really good mechanics, who have grown tired of the FAA maze, and suck at paperwork. There are 'rough around the edges' mechanics who are excellent book keepers. Good at paperwork and good with a wrench? Keeper, your aircraft's value depends on it.

CO? it's like O2. Almost no one thinks about it until they're in a jam... Not a good place to be.

Thanks for the post. A reminder for some an eye opener for other.

Take care, Rob

Re: NORSEE Letter

I agree with Rob......I really like mechanics who are neither afraid of the FAA nor willing to skimp on paperwork. The NORSEE letters can really help keep everyone honest.

I've also been gassed with CO. Not a pleasant experience, and had to have someone come get us.....had a ripping headache for a couple days. Fortunately, one of my passengers demanded that I land, they were getting violently ill.....and it wasn't bumpy. My judgement wasn't the best with the fog induced by CO.

I am going to use the LightSpeed Delta Zulu headset as a hearing aid and a CO detector
