North to Alaska - June 2020

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

BC’rs ok to Yukon without 14 day COVID thing after July 1. I think Atlin kinda straddles it being more Yukon oriented. What about the NW or Nunavut?

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

Would 100% recommend the stop at Carcross! Very very glad I stopped.

Made it from Anchorage through the pass to PTA a couple days ago. Back to the stomping grounds.

My company had created a new tie down spot for me when they heard I was bringing a plane up this year which was kind of them. So it's all tucked in. I'm going to let it rest for a couple days before I go back out in it.

Got 4 of the 6 part 135 checkrides for the various aircraft I fly up here done yesterday and today. Not a ton of flying to be done, but enough.

If anyone has questions about flying to Alaska during COVID, let me know if I can offer any specific information.

What was the reception at the Watson Lake Airport like? The Yukon restrictions are pretty draconian. Not sure I can actually visit my cabin.

I landed, fueled, and went into terminal. Never saw or spoke to anyone except the guy on the radio so not sure really.

Good Morning: I'm leaving next week from central Texas, headed to Southeast Alaska, mostly Ketchikan and Juneau areas, in a Cessna 182 Amphib. Do you have any information on the whether the requirement for a negative Covid test within 72 hours is being checked or enforced?

14-day quarantine still required for non-essential travel to Nunavut.

The "within 72 hours" part isn't being enforced for small airplanes because it's pretty unreasonable and they realize that. I would recommend getting a test as late as you can, while still being able to get results prior to leaving. Another option would be to call around and see if where you want to go first has tests available. Cordova, for example, has tests available for visitors/residents/anyone with same day results. Not sure about further SE.

I found that I was treated well by everyone since I had a negative test result along with a letter from my employer. It was clear to them that I had properly prepared and knew the rules.

Canada was much stricter than US. Canada gov is still calling me asking if I'm quarantining.

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

If anyone is going through the trench between Mackenzie and Watson Lake can you shoot a PM? There's an old airstrip that I'm interested in finding out if it's overgrown or possibly usable if someone happens to be flying by. Thanks.

Looks like you’re in the neighborhood! Any issues at Watson?

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

I kept a low profile in Watson. I’m well known there. Went there for fuel only today. Advised those who asked that I was just passing through. Heading into northern B.C. It was such a good story that I bought it myself, and here I am!

Didn’t know my way around here. Side stepped any ground transportation issues by landing on the water instead of the airport. Didn’t want to help myself to some one else’s berth but noticed a ramp I thought I could climb. It worked! I’d launched from land but never taxied ashore. Saw it on YouTube though and it was just like I saw. I’m on private property but a couple locals assured me it would be OK. Hope that’s true. I’ll happily settle with the landowner if I make his acquaintance.

For next time, there’s a new dock in front of the Brewery Bay Chalet. Privately funded. They ask only $20.00 and your airplane will be right outside your room.

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

Right on. If you get over this way there is a place to park on private ground. All travel is open between B.C. and Yukon starting July 1st. Seeing as you are coming from B.C., I am sure you would qualify. :D Shoot me an email If you plan to head this way.

My wife and I flew the 180 out to Port Alsworth Thursday and I saw that beauty of a Scout sitting there....

Newbie question, but how do you know which of the parallel runways to land on at Port Alsworth?

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

You're allowed to land either. It's an odd situation. The southern (24L, 6R) runway is now officially public (id: PAKX). It is pretty flat and Samaritan's Purse does lots of work on it so fuel planes, DC6's, and their CASA's can land on it, but the gravel size is too large really. Not a problem though. There's a food truck on that runway and ample parking along the sides.

The northern lake-side runway (6L, 24R) is privately owned but planes are welcome to land on it, identifier TPO. It is where I'm based, we sell fuel at the water for floatplanes and at the northeast end of runway for wheel planes. Since it is where fuel is sold, lots of transient planes land here. There's also a coffee shop where you pay for fuel. It's a dustier runway due to more dirt, less gravel, but is also constantly maintained.

Both runways are home to commercial operations so both are kept in great overall shape generally.

There's also an unlisted AWOS: 118.025.

A Navajo was taking off on 6L while we landed on 6R...the dust cloud is pretty impressive :-)

I flew for Glen back in '04 and can say the runways are pretty nice compared to back then. The food truck has great burgers too.

Re: North to Alaska - June 2020

We were out at Port Alsworth and spotted the Scout back before the 4th of July. As far as the food truck is concerned, I can recommend the strawberry shake. Or any of the shakes, really, after a hike to the falls or on any hot day.
