Northern North Dakota and Minnesota

Good Day All,

I Fly out of Winnipeg ,MB, Canada. I am running out of interresting short day trip destinations here in Canada. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on some interesting places to fly in to in Northern North Dakota and Minnesota. Places to overnight camp under wing or near campground, neat restaurants next to the strip, good sights, or just a strip with lots of general aviation activity to get out and chat. Also if there are any nice resorts/hotels that have a fly in strip.....this will keep the household accoutant happy! I am flying a Beech Musketeer Super III, so strips that aren't to rough would be nice. Heading south will also give me a chance to hone my E-Apis skills.

Cheers

MacDon,

There is an airshow in Minot, ND this weekend. I am not sure, but think tomorrow is the last day. It might end today tho, I just haven't heard.

There is another airshow in Sioux Falls, SD (KFSD) next weekend I think.

Re: Northern North Dakota and Minnesota

It is not the US, but how about the Norseman Floatplane Festival in Red Lake, Ontario next weekend http://www.norsemanfestival.on.ca/ . I have not been to it before and have toyed with the idea of going. I don't land at many airports in Minnesota, but work out of Park Rapids (KPKD) on a semi-regular basis and know they have a loaner car. There is a nice place to eat lunch on the west end of town at a restaurant that has a farm theme. The town itself is neat, caters to summer tourists and has a lot of nice shops your wife would probably enjoy. It would not be that long a flight for you and US customs would be right on the way. Another interesting stop would be the twin cities, land at Fleming Field (KSGS). Wip float company is located there and are an interesting visit and of course Mall of America. If you do go to the twin cities area, make sure you have a current sectional, as some of the airspace has been changed in the last 3-4 years. Steve

A couple hours east of NE MN, and you're at Osh - never a boring moment there. Sky Harbor on the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth,MN is nice little airport. Can camp there, huge beach on Lake Superior. Duluth has lots of stuff to see/do. The Richard Bong museum in Superior is interesting. Google Duluth Minnesota.

Sounds good, Bill. I am not sure if I will make it or not, My wife and daughter are going to the Taylor Swift concert in Minot Saturday, and keep hinting for me to come to Minot with them. Time will tell, but I hope to make it to Northwood.

I will let you know later in the week.

I know this is way late for your trip but perhaps it may help someone else. 37N Garrison Dam Recreational Airpark
Riverdale, North Dakota, is a great place to fly to. It is on the downstream side of the Garrison Damn. There are two campgrounds very close by. Fishing is fantastic. Also, the "Riverdale High Lodge" and the Knights bar and lounge are really cool. They took the old high school and made a very nice hotel out of it. Good steaks, and they will come pick you up.

There are a couple of golf resorts if you're into that or fishing or boating, on East Gull Lake, near Brainerd, MN. Maddens and Cragun's. Both are very near a nice grass strip, and both cater to families. Might make a nice weekend get away.

A little further west you have what appears to be a pretty good airshow Sept 26 & 27, 2009 in Sidney, MT (KSDY).

The Snowbirds, Phil Petrik, Gene Soucy, Jim Peitz, Kent and Warren Pietsch and John Mohr are all on the venue for the weekend.
