It is obvious that these paying customers and cameraman have never seen the effects of a blade strike, much less a helicopter crash. I left an instructor job where they insisted on using the fixed gas pump 15 feet from the office rather than spring for a truck. In either situation, the estimated spectators killed would be at least five or six.

Ignorance is bliss!
If the crowd only knew how close this came to being an epic disaster....

I could not understand the language of the announcer. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

It was very awesome. But watching that cameraman those few feet from the rotor, totally unaware of what would happen if he got hit, made my skin crawl. I spent part of a past life in a helicopter world, and when shit goes bad, it goes bad in a big way.

Re: Not a wreck, but ohhhh the potential.

I was perfectly happy to work, my entire career, close to the earth. I was very uncomfortable, however, working near people with rotor or prop. I loaded spray planes with the engine running, but I would shut down and lay into anyone who's one hand left the wing when in front of the wing. When the line boy was directing my pipeline plane into parking so many times in so many places, I sped up a bit and pulled the mixture to shut the engine down and park dead stick. The Army taught us well to park out in the grass at civilian fields. It was horrible PR to blow a civilian airplane over or worse.

If you want fly in very exciting ways, there are plenty of aviation jobs that don't involve the general public. The general public includes pilots who care not for the safety of others.
