Oh yea....He looked up.

Don't you hate it when the day comes that you're no longer the coolest kid on the block? I was on my way to get the 185 and take advantage of the 25t to 30kt crosswind I knew would be blowing over at Llano. As I was driving on the gravel road alongside the 30' wide runway at 88R I saw it. A P-51 Mustang taking off. As he cleared the ground his gear came up. He spotted me and banked the Mustang so it passed right over my truck not 30 feet above it. I continued to the hangar and prepped the 185. The Mustang made a few passes down the runway then landed.

I taxied over to the grass. I knew he'd be out in front of his hangar with a few of the local pilots. I set 10 degrees of flaps and pushed the throttle forward. The tail came up, I grabbed 40 degrees and the 185 popped off the ground. I eased the flaps to 20 degrees and pulled the nose up to best angle of climb. At 2,850 rpm and 64 mph the seaplane prop tore a hole in the sky. The Mustang pilot? Oh yea......he looked up.

Now the neighbors will have someone new to bitch about. And I never get tired of looking and watching P-51's.

Nice!! I knew I should have gone over there today. There was a Mustang out and about at KGTU yesterday.

Edit: Now that I watch the video again, I think that's the same guy.

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z
